🌏 Representing with Pride! 🇻🇳✨

The Medical City Department of Surgery Section of Head and Neck Surgery had the honor of attending the 9th Conference of the Asian Society of Head & Neck Oncology (ASHNO) held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam last November 1-2, 2025, with the inspiring theme “Advancing Care, Bridging Expertise.”

We are proud to share that our recent graduate and now consultant, Dr Anna Torio-Rivera, was among the selected oral presenters during the free paper session where she discussed a case of an initially unresectable thyroid cancer treated with microwave ablation.

Likewise, our current fellows-in-training, Dr Khrissa Lea Elisa V. Violago and Dr Mark Anthony Montes, together with one of our consultants Dr. Michael Jeff Fontano, also participated and were among the case reports chosen for poster presentation, this time discussing a case of advanced parotid tumor.

It was truly an honor to be presenting before esteemed experts and colleagues from across Asia. It was also a meaningful opportunity to learn, share knowledge, and strengthen collaborations — all in the pursuit of advancing patient care and excellence in Head & Neck Oncology.

✨Another milestone in thyroid care with the success of the 5th Philippine Thyroid Ablation Congress Workshop and 4th CCMA Microwave Thyroid Ablation Offline Training Program held last August 27 to 28, 2025 at Asian Hospital and Medical Center.

This year’s event was a true collaboration of minds and expertise with the partnership with Philippine Academy for Head and Neck Surgery, Inc. (PAHNSI), Philippine College of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM) and Asian Hospital and Medical Center (AHMC). Together, we brought forward the latest advancements and practical skills in the field of thyroid management.

During the 2-day congress, participants immersed themselves in a rich lineup of activities:
✨ Engaging lectures by leading experts
✨ POCUS (Neck Ultrasound) and FNAB workshop by PCEDM
✨ 10 Live Surgeries featuring both microwave ablation and radiofrequency ablation
✨ Hands-on ablation workshop

Big thanks to all the speakers, facilitators, organizers, and attendees who made this event such a success. The energy, collaboration, and shared commitment to pushing thyroid care forward were truly remarkable.

Thyroid cancer may not grab headlines like lung or breast cancer, but it’s one of the fastest-growing malignancies worldwide—ranging from indolent tumors we may safely watch to aggressive variants that test the limits of modern oncology.
Next Thursday, September 4, we’ll look at where we stand, what’s changing, and how modern approaches can reshape outcomes for our patients.

What an amazing 2 days in Manila! 🎉
The CCMA Thyroid Microwave Ablation Workshop in the Philippines successfully ended last week.

👏 A big thank you to our course director, Dr. Rainier Lutanco, for leading sessions with live cases, lectures, and hands-on training. Dozens of doctors gained valuable skills to better serve their patients.

🙏 Our sincere thanks also go to The Medical City Head and Neck Surgery for hosting and supporting this workshop!

Endocrine Surgery: Minimally Invasive Approaches for Thyroid Nodules

Dr. Rainier Lutanco, our Section Head, gave a talk on thermal ablation of thyroid nodules, particularly, microwave ablation (MWA), during the recently concluded 2nd Joint PSGS-PALES Annual Convention, 23rd PSGS Surgical Forum and 15th PALES Annual Convention with the theme, “Mastering Modern Surgery: Merging Approaches for Enhanced Care” lastJuly 22 – 26, 2025 at EDSA Shangri-La Manila, Mandaluyong City. This lecture coincided with other minimally invasive thyroid procedures from various speakers including the Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA).
