WHAT DOES THE KIDNEY DO?
http://dpcedcenter.org/basic-facts-about-kidney-disease-and-treatment
Kidneys perform crucial functions. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that extract waste from blood, balance body fluids, form urine, and aid in other important functions of the body. They reside against the back muscles in the upper abdominal cavity. They sit opposite each other on both sides of the spine.
WHAT IF KIDNEYS FAIL?
When kidneys fail, the blood must be regularly cleansed of toxins and extra fluids by using either an artifical kidney (hemodialysis), by introducing a cleansing solution into the abdomen by introducing a cleansing solution into the abdomen (peritoneal dialysis), or by using a healthy donated kidney (kidney transplant).
STAGES OF UNHEALTHY KIDNEY
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Kidneys are damaged. With CKD, your kidneys may still be working some, but they’re not working as well as they should.
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Kidney Failure is the most severe stage of CKD. Kidney failure is when your kidneys are no longer working well enough for you to live without dialysis or a kidney transplant.
Note:
http://www.joslin.org/info/Kidney-Transplants.html
As your kidneys fail, both usually fail at the same time. You can’t tell that they are failing from the amount of urine you are making, but from blood and urine tests done at your doctor’s office.
ESRD (or Kidney Failure) is fatal without the aid of HEMODIALYSIS or KIDNEY TRANSPLANT.
Hemodialysis is an artificial kidney, and must be done on a regular and permanent basis.
WHAT CAUSES KIDNEY FAILURE or ESRD?
**** Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are the most culprit.
Other causes:
* Autoimmune diseases (like lupus, HIV and IgA nephropathy)
* Genetic diseases (like polycystic kidney disease)
* Injuries
* Some medicines or other drugs
PREVENTING KIDNEY FAILURE
The best way to prevent kidney failure (ESRD) is to prevent CKD. If you have CKD, work with your doctor to slow it down. You may not be able to fix the damage that is already done, but you might be able to keep the damage from getting worse.
If you have diabetes and high blood pressure, it is very important for you to manage these. Work with your doctor to learn how.
Other ways to help protect your kidneys are to:
1. Eat a diet low in fat and salt
2. Exercise most days of the week
3. Have regular check-ups with your doctor
4. Avoid to***co
5. Avoid or Limit alcohol
WATCH OUT FOR YOUR CREATININE LEVEL
http://www.medicinenet.com/creatinine_blood_test/article.htm
The kidneys maintain the blood creatinine in a normal range. Creatinine has been found to be a fairly reliable indicator of kidney function. Elevated creatinine level signifies impaired kidney function or kidney disease.
As the kidneys become impaired for any reason, the creatinine level in the blood will rise due to poor clearance of creatinine by the kidneys. Abnormally high levels of creatinine thus warn of possible malfunction or failure of the kidneys. It is for this reason that standard blood tests routinely check the amount of creatinine in the blood.
With appropriate intervention, patients with complete failure of their kidneys can live full, productive lives. While it is true that If individuals with kidney failure do not receive dialysis or a transplant they will die, it is better to support our body system with an overall health-nurturing, cancer-fighting antioxidants and nutrients - to keep the most part of our body healthy enough to stand during hemodialysis and transplant procedure.
