Because constipation is such a significant medical and quality of life issue in the CKD population, investigators conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 28 patients on hemodialysis in which 12 g of polydextrose supplementation was provided daily for 2 months. The intervention group received 6 g polydextrose twice daily, and the supplement was administered in center on hemodialysis treatment days. At the conclusion of the study, the patients had significant constipation symptom relief and significantly improved quality of life scores. Polydextrose is considered a prebiotic fiber and is widely available over the counter. The investigators concluded that “supplementation with 12 g/d of polydextrose appears to be an efficient nutritional strategy to promote favorable effects on intestinal function and quality of life in patients with CKD.”

The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) granted EC disability benefits to a former private sector employee for his shoulder muscle tear, an injury that he sustained due to an accident at work. The said benefit was granted by ECC on appeal after his claim was denied by the Social Security System (SSS).

Appellant had been working as an administrative manager for a lending company. In June 2018, he informed his employer that in November 2017, while on his way to his place of work that was undergoing demolition, he accidentally stepped on a rock which caused him to fall on his left shoulder. He experienced pain and limitation of movement on his left shoulder which persisted for months.
