What Are Red Flags for Airway Obstruction?

Seek urgent medical care if you notice:
⚠️ Stridor (noisy breathing)
⚠️ Severe shortness of breath
⚠️ Bluish lips or face
⚠️ Sudden choking or inability to speak
⚠️ Swelling in the neck or throat

The PSO-HNS Western Visayas Chapter is a dynamic organization with a rich history of pioneering medical education and dedicated community service.

Despite the recent geopolitical changes in the region, the chapter remains united as one: Composed of 52 fellows, the chapter continues its legacy of service and advancement in ENT healthcare and education across Western Visayas and Negros Occidental.

The Chapter’s programs focus on environmental and community health advocacies, as well as guiding budding otolaryngologists to eventually become competent specialists, and active members of the Society and Chapter.

What Are Common Causes of Chronic Throat Clearing?

Frequent throat clearing may be due to:
🔹 Post-nasal drip (allergies, sinusitis)
🔹 Acid reflux (GERD/LPR)
🔹 Voice overuse
🔹 Habitual behavior
🔹 Throat lumps or masses

If symptoms are persistent, it may irritate the vocal cords and damage the voice.

How Is Chronic Cough Related to ENT Problems?

Not all coughs are lung-related! Chronic cough (lasting >8 weeks) may be linked to ENT issues such as:
🔸 Post-nasal drip
🔸 Allergies
🔸 Acid reflux (LPR)
🔸 Vocal cord irritation
🔸 Throat lumps or masses

If cough persists despite treatment, consult your ENT for a full airway evaluation.

What Is Aspiration and Why Is It Dangerous?

Aspiration happens when food, liquid, or saliva enters the airway and lungs instead of the stomach.

⚠️ It can lead to:
🔹 Pneumonia
🔹 Chronic lung infections
🔹 Breathing difficulties

📌 Persistent coughing during meals or recurrent chest infections may be a warning sign. Early ENT evaluation is important.

What Is Dysphagia and When Is It Serious?

Dysphagia means difficulty swallowing. It may feel like food is stuck in the throat or chest.

⚠️ See an ENT specialist if you have:
🔹 Pain when swallowing
🔹 Frequent choking/coughing when eating
🔹 Unexplained weight loss
🔹 Recurrent/progressive sore throat
🔹 Difficulty of breathing

These may indicate serious conditions requiring urgent evaluation.

What Is Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

It’s a Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) where a child’s breathing stops or becomes shallow due to blocked upper airway (often from large tonsils/adenoids).

Signs include loud snoring, restless sleep, daytime sleepiness, and poor attention in school.
Diagnostics include upper airway endoscopy and polysomnography (sleep study).

Treatment may involve tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy or CPAP therapy.
