The Filipino LGBTQIA+ community currently exists in a landscape of conditional acceptance and ongoing discrimination, where many find their existence permitted but not fully embraced. The community still faces stigma despite playing a significant part in Filipino culture and the country having a rich history of gender-diverse cultures. In a society shaped by the weight of tradition and expectations imposed by conservative colonizers and where heteronormative beliefs are deeply ingrained, coming out becomes more than a personal milestone — it becomes an act of protest. To celebrate pride is to celebrate one's identity, to resist against oppression, and to advocate for greater inclusivity.

Today, the hard-fought fight of previous and current generations of q***r Filipinos bore fruit, their resilience and courage evident in the progress we now witness and continue to build upon. There is still a lot to be accomplished — so long as the community continues to face injustice and prejudice, the fight goes on. The people shall continue to push for laws and policies to protect q***r communities.

This National Coming Out Day, we honor every story of self-discovery — be it bold or quiet declarations, known to others or kept under wraps. We remember the courage it takes to embrace one’s authentic self amidst a sea of ridicule or scrutiny. Opening the door to your truth should never be faced with judgment, but with love and acceptance.

“History should never be forgotten.”

On September 21, 1972, Martial Law was declared in the Philippines, marking the beginning of one of the darkest periods in our nation’s history. Civil liberties were stripped away, voices of dissent were silenced, and fear became a daily reality for countless Filipinos. The press was censored, protests were violently suppressed, and many were imprisoned, tortured, or killed for standing up for freedom and truth.

This day reminds us that democracy is fragile, and history must never be rewritten or forgotten. The atrocities of Martial Law are not just memories from decades past but urgent lessons on the dangers of unchecked power and historical distortion.

UP ALCHEMES stands in solidarity with all who continue to fight for truth, justice, and human rights. We honor the bravery of those who resisted oppression and sacrificed their lives to reclaim our freedom. Their courage is a call to remain vigilant, to speak out against tyranny, and to defend the democratic rights we hold today.

Let this day strengthen our resolve to reject lies, oppose oppression, and work toward a future built on truth, justice, and freedom for all.
