Seasonal influenza remains very high across the country. AAP analysis found that hospital admissions for kids ages 5-17 saw a 145% increase between January 4th and February 1st and new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data says 68 children have now died of influenza-associated deaths this season. The CDC classified this season as “high severity” for all age groups, which it hasn’t done since the 2017 flu season. AAP and CDC recommend everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated against the flu and it’s not too late to get a flu shot! Pertussis is a very contagious bacterial infection of the lungs, not a camping trip highlight. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, can cause:

“Behind the PPE”

A photo from 4 years ago (when the world shut down). In retrospect, we were probably dealing with a COVID Myocarditis or MIS-C, but we didn’t know it yet back then. I still consider this moment as the turning point of my career, pursuing the unexpected in pediatric critical care medicine.
