What is Bipolar Disorder?
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, Bipolar Disorder is a mental condition that affects a person’s overall mood, energy and concentration in completing daily activities or occupations. Individuals with Bipolar Disorder may experience symptoms belonging either to a manic or depressive episode, or both.
Possible Symptoms of a Manic Episode:
Feeling very elated or extremely irritable
Having a decreased desire for sleep
Racing thoughts
Feeling overly optimistic or talented about doing many things
Having excessive appetite for pleasurable activities (food, drinking and s*x).
Possible Symptoms for a Depressive Episode
Feelings very down and/ or anxious
Trouble falling asleep o oversleeping
Trouble concentrating and making decisions
Decreased interest or motivation in almost all activities
Feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of committing su***de
What is the difference between Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 Disorder?
Bipolar 1 Disorder is a diagnosis given to individuals who experience manic episodes for at least 7 days. Depressive episodes may also occur simultaneously to these manic episodes, which lasts for at least 2 weeks.
Bipolar 2 Disorder is a diagnosis given to individuals who have depressive and hypomanic (less severe than manic) episodes. They would have abnormally elevated mood or energy, lasting for at least 4 days.
