HOW TO GET STRONGER TEETH & GUMS
Step 1
Brush your teeth daily with toothpaste that contains fluoride, and pay special attention to the area where your gums meet your teeth. Fluoride is a mineral that assists in the prevention of cavities, and it helps to reverse early stage tooth decay. Avoid brushing your teeth aggressively and use a soft toothbrush. When brushing your teeth, brush them using small circular and forward and backward motions. Use your toothbrush on your tongue as well. Drink water that contains fluoride. When choosing mouthwash, select one that has fluoride in it. Purchase a new toothbrush after 3 months to effectively remove plaque.
Step 2
Floss teeth before going to bed at night to get rid of plaque. Take a piece of floss that is about 20 inches long and gently slip it between two of your teeth, pulling it up until it meets your gum. Bend the floss around one of your teeth and gently move it through the space in your teeth using short back-and-forth movements. Floss each tooth in this manner until all your teeth are cleaned.
Step 3
Eat healthfully and brush your teeth after eating. Consume foods that contain vitamin C. According to the California Department of Aging, vitamin C maintains the strength and health of the gums. Vitamin C foods to include in your diet include fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, oranges, grapefruits, kiwis, broccoli, red peppers and dark green vegetables. Consume calcium-rich foods such as spinach, bok choy, milk with little or no fat and foods such as tofu, orange juice and cereal fortified with calcium. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, calcium is required for the development of
healthy teeth.
Step 4
Have your teeth and gums examined by a dentist at least once a year. Ask him for a routine check-up and a cleaning. See your dentist sooner if you have bleeding gums, sores, pain in the oral cavity, areas that are red or white, or if you are experiencing difficulty chewing or swallowing your food. Listen to your dentist’s instructions and follow them.
