📍 Real Case Example:

Mr. Zimba, a 62-year old man living with glaucoma and hypertension, walked into a pharmacy with a simple complaint runny nose and a mild cough.

There was no pharmacist or qualified pharmacy technologist present. He was sold coldrid a combination cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine, a decongestant.

👉Two days later, he returned with:

1. Eye pain

2. Blurred vision

3. Headaches

👉What happened?

❌ Mistake:

Pseudoephedrine can increase intraocular pressure, which is dangerous for people with glaucoma.

🎯 Truth:

This was not a cold medication error, it was a knowledge error.

The person who gave it did not understand how the ingredients interact with chronic conditions like glaucoma.

🚨 Consequences:

Worsened glaucoma

Increased risk of permanent vision loss

Patient skipped eye drops due to dizziness — worsening the condition further

✅ What Should Have Happened:

With a pharmacist or trained technologist present:

The patient's medical history would be considered.

A safer option (like steam inhalation or saline spray) would be recommended.

The patient would be reminded to continue his eye drops even when sick.

📣 Bottom Line:

Do not buy medicine from a pharmacy without a pharmacist or qualified technologist present.
They are not just "medicine sellers" — they are your last line of defense against harmful drug interactions and silent risks.
