Manage your stress to strengthen your immune system. Long-term stress isn’t something we need these days given the COVID-19 situation. This type of stress suppresses our immune response and effectively weakens our immune system. This makes us more susceptible to the virus.

Mindfulness, self-awareness, meditation and practicing gratitude are all effective techniques to keep stress at bay. Altogether, these boost our immune system and keep us protected from diseases.

Not all stress is bad. In fact, our bodies need the good kind of stress to function and to prepare us to deal with challenges. The good kind of stress is short term. This type promotes immunoprotective effects such as wound healing and protection against infections. Meanwhile, chronic stress is the bad kind of stress. Not only does this affect our mental and physical well-being, it even puts us at risk by hampering the functions of our immune system. This is not something we want especially now with the coronavirus outbreak.

Aside from the elderly and those with preexisting conditions, the immunocompromised are most vulnerable to COVID-19. Therefore, we should take steps to strengthen our immune system, one of which is by managing our stress. Remember, short-term stress is good. Chronic stress is not.
