International Su***de Prevention Day 2022 celebrated at Hatoon, Ghizer under the banner of Hatoon Youth Awareness Forum on September 10th, 2022.

Director ICRD, Anayat Baig talked about the essence of lay counseling model in managing mental health crisis in Ghizer. He was of the view that lay counseling is low-cost, community-led, and sustainable intervention. It also lessens the burden on government and other institutions by giving a trained lay counselor alternative to mental health professionals. The basic skills to train people for lay counseling are listening carefully, not judging, and referring severe cases.

Thank you Sadia Danish!

It was one of the main demands from the Youth Declaration on Mental Health amid Ghizer Youth's Grand Maraka on Mental Health to bring the mental health crisis to the Gilgit Baltistan assembly for proper legislation.

Today member GB Assembly, Ms. Sadia Danish from Pakistan Peoples Party brought this very comprehensive resolution at the assembly floor.

We, the team of ICRD, center for public health GB, & youth maraka thank Ms. Sadia Danish, and request all other honourable assembly members to pass this resolution unanimously.

Maraka Truths | DAWN: Thanks to Aapa Zubeida Mustafa for this very detailed write up on Ghizer Youth's Grand Maraka on Mental Health.

"The guidelines for the maraka were simple: all the youth would get a hearing without the listeners being judgemental. The gathering was an inclusive one and all participants were provided pen and paper for expressing their views. The preliminary discussion helped frame a declaration of 21 demands. They ranged from a call for declaring a mental health emergency to counselling being indigenised and cultural programmes being held for the youth. The written input from the participants is being analysed for further action."

Nearly 700 young people and some seniors discussed su***de.

Thank you Ghazanfer Ali Sb.

This was one of the major highlights of Ghizer Youth's Grand Maraka on Mental Health. Our sisters living in private hostels had said this categorically that living in private hostels was a depression trigger for them.
