Nietzsche means that a single person often has to fight hard to stay true to themselves because the larger group — society, family, culture, or “the tribe” — tries to shape how they think and live. The group wants everyone to fit in, follow the same rules, and not stand out. But the individual who wants to be different, think freely, or live by their own ideas must struggle to protect their identity. In short, it’s hard to stay yourself when the crowd is always pushing you to be like everyone else.
