Depression is not a recent disorder; the condition dates back to Mesopotamian times. It is a serious illness that affects women and men of all ages. It is a common misconception that depression is simply something that you exaggerate in your head or a side-effect of being sad or weak. However, this isn't the case. Many people that deal with depression bottle it up inside and do not seek help.

It might seem as impossible to explain your feelings of helplessness to others but know that you are not the only one suffering. There are different paths to recovering and each person's may be a different one.

Seek professional help or simply speak to a loved one - it's important to share your feelings.

What's the difference between a psychologist/counsellor and a psychiatrist?

☑ If something is troubling you and you’d like to explore a better way to understand and work with it, we recommend seeing a therapist or counsellor. A psychologist/counsellor will help you find a solution to your problems using talk-therapy.

☑ If you’re experiencing severe symptoms such as hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or impulses and our therapist feels that you need relief more quickly than a helping relationship with a psychologist or counsellor, we will refer you to our psychiatrist, who will prescribe medication to help you overcome the problems you are dealing with.

Some people with depression tend to become a hermit (people who live in seclusion). Their home is the only safe space for them. They feel out of place when they leave their rooms. Being around people becomes exhausting for them, so they avoid everyone and everything.

If you're struggling with leaving your room or being around people - you may need professional help! Therapy is nothing to be ashamed of.
