"An AAC?!? He will never be able to speak again!"
"You need to do is push him more!"
"You should MAKE him talk!"
"He will regress, he won’t want to speak any more!"
I think AAC’s are largely misunderstood because of a lack of advocacy.
What are AAC’s?
It stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, it includes pictures, gestures, signs etc.
Who is it for?
• For kids who are non-speaking or struggling to speak
• To support a child who is already speaking
• When speech is inconsistent (i.e. comes and goes)
• When speech is difficult to understand
Why should I use it? It gives an individual a chance to communicate, it reduces demands to speak, and it supports speech instead of reducing it.
