Yesterday, 17th September '25 *Child Aid Association* at the *National Institute of Child Health (NICH)* hosted a special awareness session as part of the global *Childhood Cancer Awareness Campaign.*

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) Management

Hamza, an 11-year-old boy weighing 32 kg, known case of IDDM since May 2024, presented with abdominal pain and vomiting since morning.
*On examination,* he was a sick and irritable child, on NRB 10 L Oβ‚‚, with:
RR: 34/min
HR: 119/min
BP: 115/80 mmHg
Chest: BAE +
CVS: S1, S2 audible
Abdomen: Soft, non-tender, no visceromegaly
CNS: Conscious
*Investigations:*
RBS: High
Urinary ketones: +4 (dipstick)
ABGs: Severe metabolic acidosis
*Management:*
DKA protocol was initiated immediately.
*Outcome:*
Within 24 hours, the patient showed marked clinical improvement. He was stable on room air, with RBS 117 mg/dl. Repeat ABGs revealed compensated respiratory alkalosis with metabolic acidosis (pH 7.38, PCOβ‚‚ 27.8, HCO₃ 16.2).
This case highlights the importance of early recognition and prompt initiation of DKA protocol, leading to successful stabilization and recovery of the patient.

✨ National Institute of Child Health at Health Carnival 2025 ✨

The National Institute of Child Health (NICH) proudly participated in the Health Carnival 2025 held at the Maritime on 6th September. The event was a vibrant celebration of health awareness, with a variety of stalls set up to engage and educate the public.

🌟 Highlights of the Stalls:

Basic Life Support (BLS): A special stall to educate the general public on lifesaving skills.

Growth Monitoring: Children’s height and weight were assessed to identify underweight and overweight cases, promoting early awareness among parents.

Child Safety: An engaging stall dedicated to educating families on preventing injuries at home, school, and playgrounds.

HPV Vaccine & Immunization: A highly important stall spreading awareness about cervical cancer prevention through the HPV vaccine and the significance of timely child immunization.
🎲 Alongside these, interactive activities and fun games were arranged, making health education both enjoyable and memorable for children and parents alike.
The carnival drew attention from political leaders, professionals, and dignitaries, who visited the stalls and deeply appreciated the efforts. Prof. Nasir Saleem Saddal specially applauded the team’s dedication and extended heartfelt thanks to the students whose hard work made the event a grand success.

A seminar was held at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH) on 30th August 2025, organized by Medical Unit-3.
The program commenced with Tilawat, followed by a warm welcome from Dr. Taj M. Lagari and moderation by Dr. Faiqa Hassan.
We were honored by the presence of Dr. Mukhtiar Hussain Bhayo, Head of WHO Sindh, who graced the occasion as Guest of Honor.
An insightful presentation was delivered by Dr. Saba Shahid, Consultant and Chair of Pediatrics, Indus Hospital. The panel discussion featured esteemed experts Prof. Iqbal Memon and Dr. M.N. Lal, who shared their valuable knowledge and expertise.
The seminar was well attended by Dr. Bader Munir, Technical Officer RMNCH & Nutrition (WHO), Prof. Ashfaq Sindhu, Prof. Arit Parkash, Dr. Javed Akber Dars, Principal of Nursing College Miss Shabana along with her students, senior faculty members, and postgraduate students.
Towards the conclusion, the Guest of Honor along with Prof. Nasir Sadal, Executive Director NICH, distributed shields to the speakers, chairs, and the organizing team in recognition of their efforts.
The session was formally concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Bader-un-Nisa Sodhar, HOD Medical Unit-3.

A successful completion of recent workshop on "🧠 Cranial
Ultrasound"
held on 30th August 2025 at National Institute of Child Health Karachi in collaboration with RSP and Pediatric RSP.
Event attended by a notable number of participants from various esteemed institutions of karachi.
The workshop was designed to provide a robust learning experience, starting with the basic principles, techniques followed by an in-depth exploration of complex clinical cases and, critically, a dedicated hands-on session that allowed for practical application of learned skills.
The event received a strong positive feedback, with participants expressing their appreciation for the workshop's structured format and its contribution to their professional development.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all who attended and contributed to the success of this educational initiative
