Drinking high-sugar soft drinks have ill effects on your smile, potentially leading to cavities and even visible tooth decay.

Most soda contain phosphoric acid and citric acid, which are both highly damaging to your teeth. Acids can soften the enamel of the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities and tooth decay.

Diet soft drinks, 100-percent citrus fruit juices and other sugar free drinks can be surprisingly bad for your teeth. Most people know that drinking sugary drinks can cause tooth decay, but another cause of loss of tooth tissue is the dental erosion that occurs when teeth are exposed to acid.

People who drink cola may notice their teeth turning yellow over time. That's because soda is very acidic, and dark cola contains chromogens. Clear-soda drinkers also may get duller teeth because lemon-lime flavors contain acids, which make teeth prone to stains from other foods.

Coffee and tea stains occur when tannins in both of them build up on tooth enamel. Tannins are organic substances found in plants. Tannins in coffee, tea and even wine can lead to stains on teeth. In fact, some black teas can even cause more tooth discoloration than coffee!

However, if you simply remember to clean your teeth after drinking tea or coffee, you can greatly reduce the prevalence of coffee/tea related stains the teeth. Coffees and teas are also acidic, so remember — Rinse your mouth, wait an hour, then brush.
