Baby S was born at only 1.75kg to Saba after a long and arduous pregnancy. She had traveled from Sukkur to Karachi when her pregnancy became dangerously complicated. Diagnosed with HELLP syndrome — a severe, life-threatening condition linked to pregnancy-induced hypertension — she was turned away by multiple hospitals because of how critical her case had become.

She was also carrying one of the highest-risk twin pregnancies: a monoamniotic monochorionic pregnancy, where both babies share the same sac and placenta. This can lead to sudden, life-threatening complications like umbilical cord entanglement, cord compression, restricted oxygen supply, and unequal blood flow between the babies.

By the time Saba reached RIMS, she was critically ill — and had already lost one of her babies.

Baby S was born alone, weighing just 1.75 kg, and struggling to breathe. He was immediately admitted to the NICU with severe respiratory distress, later requiring ventilator support.

Through this, MBF stepped in to support the family with life-saving NICU care.

Today, we’re grateful to share that both Saba and Baby S are stable and on their way back home to Sukkur.

Wishing a very happy Eid Mubarak to everyone who has been a part of the Mama Baby Fund family this Ramadan! This past month we chose to highlight Baba Island and the coastal communities we serve and the on-ground reality of a community on the very frontline of climate change.

Climate change has only worsened the already challenging conditions that residents on the coast face due to a lack of urban planning, climate appropriate infrastructure and lack of good-quality medical care. The thunderstorms and rains this past week and their devastating impact are just one of more-frequently occurring events in the climate crisis. For expecting mothers, these conditions don’t just affect daily life—they shape the kind of care they can access, and the safety of their pregnancies, and of course affect newborn and baby health.

We are extremely grateful for the people who donated to MBF this past month in all capacities, to everyone who volunteered and mobilized for our community iftaar, and to everyone who shared our posts and spread the word! Because of your trust and support this month, we’ve been able to continue providing essential maternal and newborn care to families who need it most—ensuring that more women can access safe, respectful, and quality birthing services for themselves and their babies.

This Ramadan, your donation was climate action! Every contribution brought us one step closer to a future where safe birth is not a privilege, but a right.

This Eid, we’re deeply grateful for your belief in our work, and for being part of this journey with us.

If our work has ever resonated with you, please donate now!

Eid Mubarak 🌙✨

This week, we’d like to highlight an extremely concerning issue facing many new born babies in the coastal communities. Hoorain is from Bhit Island and was born safely through our program at Lady Dufferin Hospital. We remember meeting her at our 14 August celebration and noticing that she was quieter than other babies, and sensing that something may be off.

Within her first month of life Hoorain had already experienced multiple seizures. Today, she lives with a severe seizure disorder and very complex medical needs. She’s under the care of some of Karachi’s top pediatric neurologists and frequently moves in and out of hospitals for investigations, treatments, and monitoring. We still do not know the exact cause of her neurological condition. Her mother longs to see her active, interact or even cry.

Unfortunately, Hoorain’s case is not unique. At our clinic on Baba Island, we are seeing more and more babies born with neurological conditions- a number that seems much larger than the national average.

Doctors and emerging evidence point to a troubling pattern in pregnancies in coastal communities during extreme heat, inhalation of firewood smoke in closed spaces, mercury exposure from polluted waters and severe environmental degradation. All of these factors worsen maternal health and cause babies like Hoorain to be born into a world where the climate crisis begins before birth.

Our health system is not built to handle neurological complications and specialized care in newborns and young children —and especially not children in remote communities who cannot afford private care.

This Ramzan, we are sharing stories from our coastal communities to show how climate change is already shaping the lives of the most vulnerable, and how we can help bridge the gap between access to high quality healthcare regardless of finances.

This Ramazan, we’re sharing stories from Baba Island — stories of survival and the reality of accessing healthcare in coastal communities on the frontlines of climate change.

Yasmeen lives on Shamspir Island and was pregnant with her first child when she registered at MBF’s clinic. At just 28 weeks, she went into preterm labor and delivered a tiny baby boy weighing only 1.1 kg. He could not breathe on his own and had to be resuscitated and placed on a ventilator.

He remained in the hospital for a month, supported by MBF, while Yasmeen made the one-hour journey every day to be with him. When he was finally strong enough, she took him home.

Recently, he made a 45-minute boat ride back to visit us at the clinic. The baby we once feared might not survive is now nearly 2 kg and growing stronger each day. Soon, he will graduate from NG feeding.

In remote coastal communities like Shamspir, premature babies rarely survive without timely medical care. As climate change worsens living conditions along the coast, we are seeing more high-risk pregnancies and vulnerable newborns who need urgent support.

This Ramazan, your donation is climate action. It helps us support mothers, reach coastal communities, and give fragile newborns a chance to survive.

If our work has ever resonated with you, no matter where you are in the world, please donate now!

On Baba Island, a lack of resources only worsens the impacts of climate change. This Ramazan, we’re sharing stories from Baba Island and highlighting the reality that people in the coastal communities face every day.

For pregnant women, the daily conditions can quickly become dangerous. Zainab was in her third trimester when a lack of cooking gas forced her to travel to the mangroves in peak summer heat to collect firewood. That same day, a water shortage occurred and she had to carry 12 buckets of water up and down the stairs.

The physical strain and exhaustion caused severe pain and bleeding. By the time she reached the hospital, Zainab received devastating news: her baby no longer had a heartbeat. She delivered a stillborn child.

Her story is not an isolated tragedy. Across coastal communities, women rely on mangrove wood for cooking fuel, burn it in smoke-filled spaces, and carry heavy loads of water daily - all while navigating pregnancy without consistent access to care. Many of our clinic regulars have complained about eye-sight issues and breathing problems for themselves and their children.

At MBF, our work takes a climate lens because the lives of women in these communities are already shaped by climate breakdown. Energy, water, and health are inseparable — and no mother should have to risk her life, or her child’s, just to meet her family’s basic needs.

This Ramzan, your support helps protect the most vulnerable at the most critical moments of life. Your donation is climate action.

If our work has ever resonated with you, no matter where you are in the world, please donate now!

This Ramzan, Mama Baby Fund is highlighting the coastal communities we serve and where climate change is not a distant threat, but a daily reality.

Extreme heat, rising sea levels, environmental decline, and loss of livelihood are placing immense pressure on the families we see. As we know, climate change disproportionately affects women and children the most. We are seeing rising pregnancy complications, newborn health challenges, and preventable illnesses linked directly to climate vulnerability.

Through emergency transport, maternal and pediatric care, safe deliveries, and fully funded referrals, Mama Baby Fund is working to ensure that no mother or baby is left without care. Our Baba Island clinic has served as a safety net for these coastal communities, and because of it, we have seen the maternal and newborn health landscape change for the better.

Throughout this month, we’ll be sharing stories from the families behind this work — and inviting you to be part of protecting maternal and newborn health on the frontlines of climate change.

This Ramzan, your support means climate action, and helps those who need it most.

Kabeer was only four months old when his family brought him from Salehabad to our Baba Island Clinic. He was suffering from fever, persistent cough, and a severe respiratory infection. Alongside this, he had been struggling with an intense case of scabies for nearly three months, causing extreme discomfort and distress.

In the coastal island communities we serve, cases like Kabeer’s are tragically common. Families often live in overcrowded homes with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and ventilation. Rising temperatures, humidity, coastal flooding, and environmental degradation worsen living conditions, allowing respiratory and skin infections to spread rapidly, especially among infants with developing immune systems.

Due to Kabeer’s fragile condition and young age, he required hospital-based treatment, medications and close monitoring. Mama Baby Fund arranged his immediate admission to RIMS Hospital, and covered the full cost of his care, removing the financial burden from his family. With timely intervention and proper treatment, Kabeer made a full recovery, and can be seen after, healthy and happy!

His story is a reminder that climate vulnerability and healthcare access are deeply connected — and that timely, accessible care can be life-saving. Through Mama Baby Fund’s clinic at Baba Island, we work not only to provide immediate medical care but to help mitigate the health impacts of environment related challenges.

Your contributions, no matter how small, allow us to help those who need it most.

Asma Akthar was 31 when she came to our Baba Island clinic with her fifth pregnancy, and a history of four miscarriages over ten years of marriage. She was extremely distressed and worried of repeating the losses she had suffered.

With the support of Mama Baby Fund, Asma received consistent care, essential support, and close follow-up throughout her pregnancy and a referral to Lady Dufferin Hospital. At 37 weeks, timely decisions led to the safe delivery of a healthy baby girl through a C-section - pictured here!

Born at just 30 weeks, Durushan weighed just 800 grams. She was the only surviving one from a set of twins delivered during preterm labor.

Her mother, Taj Bibi, had presented with complications at Hub Chowki, and both babies were delivered with very low birth weight and compounding health complications. Durushan faced overwhelming odds from the start. She developed respitory distress syndrome, sepsis, and acute kidney failure. After initial care in multiple facilities, MBF transferred her to RIMS TRAUMA for NICU care, where she remained for several days.

Today, she weighs almost 5 pounds and is healthy and stable, pictured here with Taj Bibi.

Cases like this are why our NICU fund exists.

It is open to babies all over Pakistan, and serves as a lifeline for premature and critically ill newborns who would otherwise not have access to specialized care.
