*Hypertension* : Hypertension is another name for high blood pressure. It can lead to severe health complications and increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and sometimes death. Blood pressure is the force that a person’s blood exerts against the walls of their blood vessels. This pressure depends on the resistance of the blood vessels and how hard the heart has to work. Hypertension is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and aneurysm. Managing blood pressure is vital for preserving health and reducing the risk of these dangerous conditions.
SYMPTOMS:
A person with hypertension may not notice any symptoms, and so people often call it a “silent killer.” It is vital to check blood pressure regularly. In rare and severe cases, high blood pressure can cause: sweating, anxiety, sleeping problems, blushing. If high blood pressure becomes a hypertensive crisis, a person may experience headaches and nosebleeds.
*JUANDICE*: Also known as icterus, is a yellowish or greenish pigmentation of the skin due to high bilirubin levels. Jaundice in adults is typically a sign indicating the presence of underlying diseases involving abnormal heme metabolism, liver dysfunction, or biliary-tract obstruction.
This is known as hyperbilirubinemia, and it causes the yellow color in the skin and eyes.
*URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS* :It is an infection in any part of your urinary system e.g. kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary track (bladder and urethra). These are more common in women.
It is characterized by burning sensation while urinating, strong smelling and bright red or pink urine (sign of blood in urine), pelvic pain in women.
Antibiotics e.g. (Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, Fosfomycin, Nitrofurantoin, Cephalexin, Ceftriaxone) are first line treatment for UTIs.

Hypertension : High blood pressure (BP), or hypertension is defined as elevated BP, with a systolic pressure (SBP) between 120 and 129 mm Hg and diastolic pressure (DBP) less than 80 mm Hg. Stage 1 hypertension, with an SBP of 130 to 139 mm Hg or a DBP of 80 to 89 mm Hg.Hypertension is the most common complication and is a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, vascular disease, and chronic kidney disease.
JUANDICE: Also known as icterus, is a yellowish or greenish pigmentation of the skin due to high bilirubin levels. Jaundice in adults is typically a sign indicating the presence of underlying diseases involving abnormal heme metabolism, liver dysfunction, or biliary-tract obstruction.
This is known as hyperbilirubinemia, and it causes the yellow color in the skin and eyes.
Normal levels of bilirubin in blood are below 1.0 mg/dl (17 μmol/L), while levels over 2–3 mg/dl (34–51 μmol/L) typically result in jaundice.
URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS :It is an infection in any part of your urinary system e.g. kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary track (bladder and urethra). These are more common in women. It is characterized by burning sensation while urinating, strong smelling and bright red or pink urine (sign of blood in urine), pelvic pain in women. It occurs when bacteria enters to urinary tract through urethra they multiply there. Urinary track is designed to keep away those invaders but sometimes these defenses fall and lead to development of urinary track Infection.

22/08/2022

Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (for example, contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine. Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the neck and pain in the limbs. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis (usually in the legs).
Polio vaccines are vaccines used to prevent poliomyelitis (polio). Two types are used: an inactivated poliovirus given by injection (IPV) and a weakened poliovirus given by mouth (OPV). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends all children be fully vaccinated against polio. The inactivated polio vaccines are very safe. Mild redness or pain may occurat the site of injection.
PharmistaCo Student Organization is going to arrange a Quiz Competition about polio and polio vaccine on 28 August, 2022 Sunday. Every candidate participating in this competition will get a chance of learning. Certificates will be provided to the position holders as well as to the participants.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disease that causes muscles to become weak and waste away. People with SMA lose a specific type of nerve cell in the spinal cord called motor neurons, that control muscle movement. Without these motor neurons, muscles don’t receive nerve signals that make muscles move. The word atrophy is a medical term that means smaller. With SMA, certain muscles become smaller and weaker due to lack of use.
Symptoms of SMA
The symptoms of SMA and when they first appear depend on the type of SMA you have.
Typical symptoms include:
• floppy or weak arms and legs
• movement problems – such as difficulty sitting up, crawling or walking
• twitching or shaking muscles (tremors)
• bone and joint problems – such as an unusually curved spine (scoliosis)
• swallowing problems
• breathing difficulties
SMA does not affect intelligence or cause learning disabilities.
Types of SMA
There are several types of SMA, which start at different ages. Some types cause more serious problems than others.
The main types are:
• type 1 – develops in babies less than 6 months old and is the most severe type
• type 2 – appears in babies who are 7 to 18 months old and is less severe than type 1
• type 3 – develops after 18 months of age and is the least severe type affecting children
• type 4 – affects adults and usually only causes mild problems
Treatments for SMA
It's not currently possible to cure SMA, but research is ongoing to find possible new treatments.
Treatment and support is available to manage the symptoms and help people with SMA have the best possible quality of life. Treatment may involve:
• exercises and equipment to help with movement and breathing
• feeding tubes and dietary advice
• braces or surgery to treat problems with the spine or joints.
