Twenty-five years ago, two visionaries disturbed by the plight of the visually impaired in Pakistan set up a Trust to fight eye disease and blindness as a free public service. Rarely, if at all, have the achievements of any Trust touched so many lives in so short a time. Over 18 million lives have benefited from the noble thoughts and actions of Graham Layton and Zaka Rahmatulla, the founders of the Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust commonly referred to as “LRBT”. In 1985-86, the first year of our operations, we treated 11,699 patients. In 2009-10, almost two million (1,967,993). In our 25 years of existence, we have treated over 18 million (18,418,801) patients in OPD and performed over 1.90 million (1,929,536) eye surgeries all absolutely FREE. Our efforts have contributed to a significant reduction in the prevalence of blindness in Pakistan. From humble beginnings in a mobile surgical unit based at Tando Bago in 1985, we have built a network of 16 purpose-built Eye Hospitals & 41 Community Eye Care Centers in all 4 provinces. These are staffed with highly experienced & skilled doctors and technicians. LRBT Hospitals are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment, which very few other eye hospitals have, even in the private sector. We have a three-tier service delivery structure consisting of the following facilities:-

2 Tertiary Hospitals: Centers of Excellence in Karachi & Lahore providing comprehensive eye care.
14 Secondary Hospitals: Diagnostic & Curative services for curable blindness
41 Community Eye Care Centers: Treatment of simple eye diseases, refraction, screening & referral.

From where do you come?

"I come from a village near Burewala. Its 300km from here."

How much does the travelling cost you? How much time does it take?

"Its about 1000 rs for the round trip. I leave at 2am and reach here at about 7:30 am."

What do you do?

"Mehnat mazdoori..."

How long have you been coming to this hospital?

"I come every month. It has been 8 years!"

And then he looked at me and passed me a smile whose essence was beyond the faculties of my mind. To my astonishement, it seemed very original. I stared at him in disbelief and didn't know what to comprehend from that smile. Why is he so happy? He should be whinning about his total blindness in one eye and significantly impaired vision in the other eye. This man is on the verge of total blindness, can only count fingers from less than a meter and yet he works and he comes alone for check-up every month. How come is he happy? I was compelled to ask more.

Any problems at home or work?

"No. Everything is fine. I am doing ok. I just don't want my vision to go down any further. I have a sister at home who is completely blind and dependent on others. Just don't want that to happen to me. Many doctors like you at this hospital have been doing a lot of efforts for my vision. I am grateful. May God do good to you people and make you more successful."

And there i found my answer and felt an immense surge of happiness. I couldn't hide my smile too...
