Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances — such as calcium, oxalate and uric acid — than the fluid in your urine can dilute. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that prevent crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form.
Avoid stone-forming foods:
Beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, and most nuts are rich in oxalate, which can contribute to kidney stones. If you suffer from stones, your doctor may advise you to avoid these foods or to consume them in smaller amounts.
Stress: Lifestyle strains and stresses are a big cause of kidney stone formation, often combined with chronic dehydration. Diet: A high protein diet, or a diet high in oxalates, phosphates and other minerals, can increase the risk of uric acid stones.
Caffeine intake has been shown to be associated with increased urinary calcium excretion and, as such, could potentially increase the risk of developing kidney stones, although in our previous reports we consistently found an inverse association between consumption of caffeine-containing beverages, such as coffee .
Hormonal imbalance - Rarely, an increase in the hormones produced by the parathyroid glands can lead to hypercalcemia (too much calcium), which can cause stones to form.
Symptoms of kidney stones may include:
Sharp pain in your back, side, lower belly (below your belly button), or groin that may come and go.
Nausea and vomiting.
Blood in your urine.
The feeling of sand or small particles passing through when you urinate.
Pain when you urinate.
Feeling like you need to urinate but cannot.
