Scoliosis surgery,

These are the operative photos of a 5-hour scoliosis correction and alignment surgery performed on an 18-year-old female who was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis at the age of 14.

Scoliosis is a spinal deformity or disturbance of an otherwise well-organized 25-member intercalated series of spinal segments. It is often oversimplified as merely a lateral deviation of the spine, but in reality, it is a complex three-dimensional (3D) deformity. Two-dimensional imaging systems (plain radiographs) are somewhat limited, and scoliosis is defined as a greater than 10° lateral deviation (sideways curve) of the spine from its central axis.

The major types of non-idiopathic scoliosis are congenital (caused by malformation or faulty segmentation of the vertebrae) and neuromuscular scoliosis (caused by muscular imbalance).

Doctors initially assumed her condition was related to the genetic mutation of the FBN-1 gene, known as Marfan’s syndrome.

Her spine had three curves: the upper thoracic curve was 25°, the thoracic curve was approximately 75°, and the lumbar curve was 55°. While mild angles may be considered for observation or bracing, patients with a Cobb angle of ≥50° often require surgical intervention. This involves using instrumentation systems, such as hooks and screws, to anchor long rods to the spine. These rods ensure the correction of the curvature and its stability over time.

The surgical instruments are attached in a way that redistributes the stresses on the bones and maintains proper alignment while the bones of the spine fuse.

Her abnormal spinal curves were nearly fully corrected through dorsal surgery with stabilization. She spent 5 days in the hospital, 6 weeks out of school and work, and had a total recovery time of about 6 months.

💔 Gone Too Soon, Forever in My Heart 💔
This little angel was just 6 years old… a pure soul who fought the silent battles of Cerebral Palsy with the sweetest smile. I was blessed to spend 6 precious months with this beautiful child — months filled with innocent laughter, tiny achievements, and endless love.

Today, this angel is no longer among us, and my heart feels a silence that words can’t describe. 💭
Some souls come into our lives for a short time, yet they leave an everlasting mark — a reminder of love, patience, and strength beyond measure. 🌸

May Allah bless this innocent soul with the highest rank in Jannah, where there is no pain, no struggle, only peace. 🕊️
You will always be remembered, my little star — forever in prayers, forever in heart. 🤍
