Hamid Bin Ismael, who was bitten by a dog during the floods, began showing symptoms similar to rabies about a week after the incident. On social media, it was widely claimed that he had contracted the rabies virus after being bitten by a rabid dog. However, his hospital rabies test came back negative.
Social media users were also spreading the claim that he was the 21st person in the world to recover from rabies.
But according to a report by ARY News, Hamid did not have rabies — he had tetanus.
Rabies specialist Dr. Naseem stated that “all of Hamid’s symptoms were consistent with tetanus.”
Meanwhile, the secretary of Al-Khidmat, who supervised Hamid’s treatment, also confirmed that Hamid did not have rabies but tetanus, as his tetanus test was positive while his rabies test was negative.
Furthermore, rabies expert Dr. Rana Jawad said, “If someone develops rabies symptoms, the chances of survival are zero. The death rate is nearly 100%.”
