(Revitalize Your Mobility & Comfort) SCAR MOBILIZATION ⬆️⬇️ When Should I Start Scar Mobilization? 🤔

One of the most common questions after surgery is: “When should I start scar mobilization?” Well, the answer isn’t that simple, but that’s why I’m here to help you understand it! 😎

You should usually begin scar mobilization 2-3 weeks after surgery, once the wound is fully closed and there’s no sign of infection or discharge. Patience is key, but starting at the right time can prevent scar tissue from sticking and causing stiffness later on.

Why is this so important? If scar tissue sticks, it can stop the area from moving normally. 🛑 The goal of mobilization is to keep the scar flexible, reduce pain, and promote healing.

Pro tip: Get help from a professional! 🙌 An experienced therapist can show you how to mobilize your scar correctly – and you’ll avoid problems caused by starting too early or using the wrong techniques. 😉

Remember: if you’re recovering from a clavicle fracture, like the athlete in the picture, scar mobilization is especially important! 🏋️‍♂️.

Read on to learn a system to review an AP lumbar spine X-Ray (swipe for lateral lumbar spine anatomy)

LUMBAR SPINE AP X-RAY
👨🏽‍💻As always this film needs to be reviewed in conjunction with a lateral film but there are a few things you should be looking out for on the AP view

1️⃣Pedicles - if you’ve been following for a while you will know the importance of reviewing the pedicles! Check to see there are two particles present at each vertebral level as a missing pedicle could represent an aggressive lesion such as a bone metastasis

2️⃣Outline the vertebra - try and outline each vertebral body and check for any erosion of the endplates or loss of vertebral height. Then correlate this with the lateral view...

3️⃣Transverse processes - can be difficult to see but try and outline each looking for fracture or aggressive lesion

4️⃣Psoas muscles - may be tricky but see if you can outline the psoas muscles which may be widened with a haematoma or abscess or outlined by gas in a retroperitoneal perforation

5️⃣Sacro-iliac joints - narrowing and sclerosis is most commonly degenerative but if bilateral and a younger patient consider a sacro-ileitis as part of a seronegative spondylarthropathy

6️⃣Ribs - check for fracture

7️⃣Lung bases - if you can see these check for consolidation, pleural effusion or mass

As always be systematic! Most mistakes are made because of a lack of a thorough review rather than a lack of knowledge.
