*FACIAL_PALSY*

Facial palsy is a paralysis or severe weakness of the facial muscles on one side of the face.
〰️It is believed to be due to a swelling of the nerve that controls the muscles of the face which may be due to temporary and permanent damage of facial nerve.
*CAUSES*:
⭕Viral infections such as ⭕Bell’s palsy
⭕Surgical causes
⭕Bacterial causes such as middle ear infection.
⭕Neurological conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome.
⭕Traumatic injury such as fractures to the brain, skull or face.
⭕Birth trauma
⭕Congenital conditions
⭕Rare genetic syndromes
⭕Stroke
*SYMPTOMS*:
🔴Facial paralysis on one side (rarely are both sides of the face affected)
🔴loss of blinking control on the affected side.
🔴Decreased tearing.
🔴Drooping of the mouth to the affected side.
🔴Altered sense of taste.
🔴Slurred speech.
🔴Drooling.
🔴Pain in or behind the ear.
*Physical therapy treatment* :
✅Eye care and taping the eye closed.
✅Mouth care and dry mouth management.
✅Guide how to make eating and drinking easier.
✅Massage to keep the muscles mobile and healthy.
✅Stretches to lengthen muscles which have become short or tight.
✅Exercises to help relearn and develop balanced facial movements.
✅Relaxation of facial nerve and muscles by relaxation techniques.
✅Exercises to reduce involuntary, unwanted movements.
