Polio is a highly infectious viral disease that mainly affects children under 5 years old. It invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.

*Symptoms and risk:*

🦠 Polio spreads person-to-person, mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less often, by contaminated water or food.

🤒 Early symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, and limb pain.

🧑‍🦽 1 in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis, and up to 10% of those affected die when their breathing muscles fail.

💔 Anyone unvaccinated remains at risk.

*Key facts:*

🔹 There is no cure for polio, it can only be prevented through vaccination.

🔹 As long as one child remains infected, children everywhere are at risk.

🔹 Thanks to global vaccination efforts, wild poliovirus cases have dropped by over 99% since 1988.

💪 A polio-free world means no child will face lifelong paralysis again.

Health Data in Action – Strengthening Health Systems through Collaboration

Punjab Minister for Health & Population, Khawaja Imran Nazir, graced the “Health Data in Action – Provincial Learning Exchange” as Chief Guest, held at a local hotel in Lahore.
The event was organized by the National Health Support Program (NHSP), Punjab, Health & Population Department, Government of the Punjab, bringing together provincial health teams, policymakers, and development partners to promote evidence-based health planning and improved primary healthcare delivery.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir highlighted that Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has placed health and education among her top priorities.

“There are no financial constraints in the health sector,” he stated. “If we work with commitment and dedication, there will be no hurdles in our way.”

“The doors of Punjab’s Health Department are open for every province,” he said. “We are ready to learn from each other’s experiences and collaborate for meaningful health reforms.”

Minister Nazir further emphasized that health data plays a vital role in identifying service delivery gaps, improving decision-making, and guiding future planning. Appreciating the efforts of NHSP Punjab, he commended the program for creating “a valuable platform that unites all provinces to share knowledge and strengthen evidence-based health governance.”
