*ObsessiveβCompulsive Disorder (OCD)* β
*Definition*: A mental disorder marked by obsessions and/or compulsions
*Obsessions*: Recurrent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts (e.g., fear of contamination)
*Compulsions*: Repetitive behaviors to reduce anxiety (e.g., hand washing)
Person recognizes thoughts/acts are excessive, but feels unable to control
Causes significant distress and interferes with daily functioning
Anxiety increases if compulsions are prevented
Onset usually in *adolescence or early adulthood*
*Related to serotonin imbalance in the brain*
Often coexists with anxiety and depression
Common Examples
Excessive hand washing
Repeated checking (locks, gas)
Counting or arranging items
Intrusive thoughts of harm or dirt
Management / Treatment
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, sertraline)
