Metamorphopsia is often the first thing patients notice – even when visual acuity is still normal.
Quantitative tools such as M-CHARTS show that metamorphopsia may be present in up to ~80–90% of eyes with neovascular AMD, despite preserved VA (Nowomiejska et al., 2013).
It is highly prevalent across macular diseases and significantly impacts daily functioning.

High-resolution SD-OCT frequently reveals the structural basis of these distortions – IRF/SRF, vitreomacular traction or early RPE and outer retinal changes.

🗓️ On Wednesday, 10 December at 7:00 a.m. GMT-6, Dr Maria Fernanda Rebollo Ramirez (Mexico) will present:
“Decoding the Visual Field: Clinical Cases in Perimetry Interpretation.”

This case-based session will show how to:
• distinguish glaucomatous vs. non-glaucomatous visual field defects,
• correlate structural (OCT, fundus) and functional (perimetry) findings,
• decide whether you are seeing early damage or true progression,
• recognise artefacts, atypical anatomy and “suspicious but not yet glaucomatous” fields.

Learn how to put all the “puzzle pieces” together and make more confident decisions in your everyday glaucoma practice.

👁️ Tomography red flags — Pachymetry (quick read)

Spot these fast:
• I–S asymmetry: inferior thinner than superior
• Steep slope: sharp thickening from thinnest point → periphery
• Off-center minimum: thinnest point shifted (often inferior/IT)
• How thin is “thin”? Use as guidance, not gospel — concern ~

👁️ World Diabetes Day | 14 November
Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness

Diabetic Retinopathy often develops silently — long before any changes in vision appear. Elevated blood sugar can damage the smallest retinal vessels, leading to ischemia and loss of perfusion that the patient can’t feel — but the right imaging can see.

🩸 OCT-Angiography (OCT-A) helps detect what the eye can’t see.
Here’s what to look for:
🔹 Reduced flow in the choriocapillaris layer
🔹 Enlarged or irregular FAZ (Foveal Avascular Zone)
🔹 Microvascular dropout — small dark areas of non-perfusion

📈 Early detection matters.
Research confirms that OCT-A can reveal microvascular perfusion deficits even before diabetic retinopathy becomes clinically visible
(Carnevali et al., Ophthalmology Retina 2017; Kaizu et al., Br J Ophthalmol 2024).
