💡Autoimmune diseases are more common in women — and they can show up in the eye.
A 63-year-old patient with rheumatoid arthritis and keratitis sicca. AS-OCT revealed a reduced tear meniscus and ocular surface changes consistent with systemic immune involvement.

📆 Yesterday we marked World Health Day — a good moment to look at eye health in a broader context.

What we see can sometimes reflect processes happening beyond the eye itself.
Homonymous hemianopia is one of the clearest examples.

💡 It is a loss of the same half of the visual field in both eyes — not caused by an ocular condition, but by damage along the visual pathway in the brain, most commonly following a stroke or other neurological events.
For patients, the symptoms may initially be subtle.
Objects disappearing on one side. Difficulty reading. Changes in spatial awareness.

In diagnostics, however, the pattern is clear.
Visual field loss may be the first sign of neurological disease — requiring further investigation beyond ophthalmology.
Because sometimes, what a patient sees tells a much bigger story.

🌷April marks Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month

👁️ Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the conditions where differences between women and men have real clinical relevance.

Women are more frequently represented among patients with AMD — largely due to age, but also influenced by genetic factors, lifestyle, and systemic health. The potential role of hormonal influences is also increasingly being discussed.

This is why early detection is so important.

April 2026 | Clinical Case
📆 In our calendar series of clinical cases, we highlight how complex ocular conditions can be. The April example presents another situation in which a single eye reveals two different pathologies.

The anterior segment OCT scan shows features consistent with corneal epithelial basement membrane dystrophy. Meanwhile, the retinal OCT B-scan reveals adult-onset vitelliform macular dystrophy.
Both images originate from the same eye of the patient.

👁 “An eye can have as many diseases as it pleases.”

That is why, in diagnostics, it is so important to be able to look at the entire eye — from the cornea to the retina. The REVO system enables imaging of both the anterior and posterior segments within a single OCT examination.
