MINISTERING TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
WHAT IS SPECIAL NEEDS?
Simply put- children or adult with additional needs- having any form of disability.
It can be physical, emotional, intellectual, cognitive or any form.
Churches, Mosques, schools, and the society at large have neglected and forgotten these group of people: children and adults with special needs.
We have failed God in this area.
It’s my prayer that your burden and zeal for reaching these precious young people will blossom as you read this.
Whether you agree or not, The number of children and adults with special needs is rising daily.
These needs may include physical, emotional, or cognitive.
Some needs are obvious, while others may not be.
Parents have shared their stories of heartache. Unfortunately, some of these encounters were even more in the churches.
Our churches should be a place of succor and encouragement for these ones BUT no, it’s become a place of condemnation and heartache for them.
Some see special needs as a deliverance case; very good point - BUT it is at mount Zion(church) that deliverance will come for them.
But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. Obadiah 1:17
I am sure, if we begin to look at your vision and mission statement, they are inclusive- inclusive I mean, you want to serve and cater for all- so why shut the door against children and adults with special needs and their parents- are they not part of the ALL you want to serve and cater for?
In some churches, it is a faith issue- No children church for them, we will only pray for them, who told you that have not prayed?
Let’s look at some scriptures to buttress my points.
Psalm 127:3-5 KJV: Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. — Mark 10:13-16
Ezekiel 18:4 KJV: Behold, all souls are mine.
Psalm 24:1 KJV: The earth is the Lord‘s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Isaiah 54:13 KJV: And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
How to minister to them in our churches:
1. Become lifelong learner of their family:
The parents and siblings of these children or adults with special needs know their needs better than anyone else.
2. Proper understanding of the needs- Read books on special needs, attend trainings and seminar on the said subject. Let it become part of your CPD as church or ministry.
3. Ascertain the level of severity of the needs- assessment( this can be done by a group of professionals-Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, Speech therapists, Special educators, psychologists, counselors and so on.
4. Draw conclusion with the team on the way forward for the child.
5. Draw out an ISP(IEP and IBP)
6. Be in tune with the Holy Spirit of God.
7. Pray constantly for them.
8. Be strategic in your approach.
9. Make their learning tangible and real.
10. Make their instructions as simple as possible.
11. Use the scripture to address them.
12. Be patient with them.
13. Be welcoming. Don’t reject them.
14. Don’t talk down on them.
15. Don’t compare them with other neuro typical Children.
16. Celebrate their little milestones.
17. Understand that every child is unique and treat them so.
