About the film:
In the heart of the Baltic, the small Estonian island of Kihnu - inhabited by just a few hundred people - holds an ancient secret. In 2015, French journalist Sebastian Leban revealed to the world what could be Europe's last matriarchy.
In Kihnu, where the men are away fishing for long periods of time, it is the women who sustain the local culture: they work the land, drive tractors, weave traditional clothes, raise their children, run daily life and welcome visitors with pride in their heritage. But what exactly did Leban realise? What makes this island such a unique place?
