It was a total joy and honour to be teaching my love of anatomy again as part of .pilates September reformer teacher training academy.
In my undergraduate degree for chiropractic, anatomy was one of my worst subjects. But then I qualified as a massage therapist and started treating people, and I could see the ways in which anatomy became the language that explained EVERYTHING. I went from getting “Pass” marks to consistently “High Distinctions”, and eventually graduated from my Masters degree as both Dux and First in Clinical Studies.
I love anatomy because it’s the common tongue we all share across movement and medicine disciplines. Understanding anatomy helps you apply critical thinking in any scenario, so you can feel confident in helping literally anyone who may walk in off the street.
Anatomy can feel daunting because it’s often unfortunately taught in ways that are really dry and cerebral, and ironically extremely disconnected from the body. But every time we take a breath, make a movement, or watch someone else move, we’re studying anatomy. Anatomy is the bridge between knowledge and our felt experiences of inhabiting a body.
Thank you .pilates, and all the academy participants for the trust. I couldn’t recommend a better program for anyone looking to further their depth of understanding of movement, and learn how to teach it in a safe and effective manner.
Also special mention to one of my teachers and mentors, , who I’ve been incredibly lucky to learn from over the years. Dr Dooley has done so much for the profession, and for professionals like myself, and I wouldn’t be the practitioner I am today without her.
