My statement as a member of the specialist committee debating prolonging maternity leave in Portugal to 6 months at full pay to support exclusive breastfeeding.

I am on a specialist council with 7 others where we are working to pass a new law to guarantee that all women can spend 6 months with full pay at home with their babies to support exclusive breastfeeding as formally recommended by the World Health Organisation. This was also the recommendation of a report (supported by WHO and the DGS) we published in 2015 called the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative which is the largest international comparative interactive data base in the world, a report we will be re-doing in September this year.

This is our 2nd round at parliament debating prolonging maternity leave in Portugal. 2 years ago we managed over 34 000 signatures but we need more to be able to debate this subject further to ultimately pass it as a law.

This benefits everyone!!!!! Breastfeeding supports better health for mothers and babies, causes less of a foot print on the environment (less plastic waste with bottles etc and Co2 emissions than formula production), increases GDP, higher IQ’s, boosts our economy, saves money for the DGS, less household costs, lowers cancer rates and non-communicable diseases etc…..the list can go on.
