Dado has had some time on his hands, so he was nominated to write this week’s post, enjoy!
What a lovely day here at Over the Edge. The sun is shining shyly over the hills, white clouds float lazily across a vast blue sky, and a cool breeze plays mischievously with the shimmering treetops. Spring is doing its best to free itself from the bear hug of a long, heavy winter — Normally at this time of the year flowers are already blooming with abandon, grasses are growing shiny and tall and the air is full with the lively music of wild bees and insects, frogs and crickets and the dancing of butterflies. But for now nature is waking up gently and slowly.
These days I have plenty of time to observe, smell, hear and feel all that is shifting around us from the expansive deck outside our cantina, floating between earth and sky. The reason I’m free to indulge in all this goodness on a late Monday morning is that two weeks ago I had laser eye surgery, and the doctor has forbidden me from doing any kind of work, lifting or carrying for a month.
At first this felt like unwelcome news — for many years I’ve been constantly moving, working, creating and taking care of all the machines, animals and people who share this beautiful space with us. It was quite a shock to my system. Yet we humans are remarkably good at adjusting to new situations, especially when we stop fighting the change and simply flow with it.
The transition was made easier by the wonderful, loving care of the incredible people I’m blessed to have around me. I shifted my bedroom from the very top of the hill to the caravan just above the cantina to make things easier and more comfortable, and settled into the new reality, hugged by the abundant nature that surrounds us.
What struck me from the very first moment was that there is really not much difference between being fully active and being completely still. The intensity of life flowing through me feels exactly the same — and I’m making good use of this opportunity, observing and sensing with all the time in the world, while remaining anchored in my center. Where else to be?
The dogs visit at all hours — beautiful Bodhi guards outside the caravan, lovely Dharma lies at my feet. On my way to the shower I stop to cuddle the cats, then pass by the horses, who greet me with soft neighing or nudge for a scratch or a carrot.
Meanwhile, Nayana is weaving together the threads that connect our little world to the outside, Matteo is shouldering my duties alongside his own with great energy, and Teddy is taking care of me and the homestead with so much love.
As it looks, it’ll be a while before I hop back on my tractor, so we’re looking for someone who’d like to come and spend time here with us — sharing this wonderful space, being part of our small and happy community, and helping with whatever is needed. 🌿
For now, back on the deck — the breeze is still dancing, the horses are munching their lunch below, Matteo and the tractor are preparing hay nets for the night, and Teddy is hanging laundry that will no doubt be dry within half an hour in this exquisitely fresh air. ☀️
