Over the Edge - Aromatics & Distillation - Natural Horses
- Retreats & Reconnect - Osho For more info about the sort of things we're up to go to, www.otefarm.eu

Our home in Portugal is 30 hectares of some of the most beautiful and empty land in Europe. We live with a herd of 9 horses, and are guided by nature in how we care for them, ourselves, our land. We live 'over the edge' always expanding our horizons, outgrowing ourselves and our ideas on a daily basis, exploring, listening, living fully. But we are also practical people, with practical skills and this is a place you can learn practical stuff to use in your daily life. If you are interested in horses and their native needs, essential oils and herbs, or knowing yourself more deeply, come and visit.

Hanging out with a herd of healthy, happy horses is always deeply relaxing. There is an atmosphere of calm around them, a feeling of being grounded and connected.
You can feel your nervous system settle, your breathing slow and your heart beat more rhythmically. It’s just the way it is, and there’s even science around it if you’re that way inclined.

But when you find the herd in rain-mode the silence goes even deeper. They stand in the lee of a hill, or protected by trees, or in the shelter, completely still, turned in on themselves.
They don’t complain like we humans do, they just quietly let it flow over and around them.
No resistance to what is. Until the raindrops ease, then they stretch and shake and wonder off to find some grasses. What rain? They say.
There is no better meditation teacher than a horse, be present, flow with what is. so simple….

I’ll Tell you something though, with all this rain we’ve been having it is going to be one magnificent spring! There is nowhere as beautiful as Portugal in spring, the colours the smells, the skies…. And this year will be something else! So I highly recommend you book your visit now.😀

And if you really want to get down with the plant spirits, go for total immersion and join us in one of our workshops. Learn how to distill essential oils and hydrosols and other wild medicine.
But whatever your fancy, - workshops, gentle walks through the woodlands, long hikes over the rolling hills, or just soaking up the sunshine and meditating with the horse as you sit on the deck - dreaming of springtime in Portugal is definitely the best antidote to January.

Here at Over the Edge we’re starting to stick our noses out from under the blanket and wonder if it’s safe to come out yet! Is Winter easing up a bit? Could it be? Days are longer, that wicked North wind has died down, the rosemary is full of bees so maybe, just maybe we can get back out there :)
Not that we’ve really been under the blankets all this time of course, farm life never stops. But it’s an inner feeling isn’t it?

And as a sign of optimism, and to give you all a whiff of Alentejo spring, we have a 10% discount on everything in the shop. So off you go, help yourself to lots of lovely smelly stuff and then book yourself into one of the workshops for spring. Use Code Jan10% at check out to claim your discount https://www.otefarm.eu/shop-hydrosol-essential-natural-soap-portugal/

Well here it is, that random date set by some long ago Pope where we mark some passage of time and throw fire in the air to scare away the demons as we move towards the light 😊🥳🎆

So, happy New Year to all you dear people ❤️

Dado And I have a long-standing tradition to be in bed before midnight on New Year’s Eve and this year will be no different, but first we shall hang around the fire, drink a glass of wine and share stories of those who have blessed our home this year and other good things.

However you are celebrating this year (or not) we are sending you peace and love from this place of peace and love, where silence permeates the air, and wishing you all that you wish yourselves. I hope to see some of you here in person in 2026 but that’s for tomorrow. Today we celebrate.

We had frost in the valley this morning! It’s the closest we’ll ever get to a white Christmas so here’s a horse in a red hat and winter roses to add to the festivities 🥳😊 Wishing you all happiness and thank you for your presence here. Hope to see you present in Portugal in 2026 🦄🩷

Samson has become quite the escape artist recently, finding the most obscure places to slip through the fence that take us days to find. And every time Matte repairs the fence with a “That’ll fix him” Sam smiles discreetly and finds another spot. And then Q, Sam’s faithful consort, started joining him on these night forays.

Now, Q is a proper lady, a very well-bred registered Quarter horse, who grew up with stables and things till she was 4 or 5. She’s always had an eyebrow raised at the lifestyle I dragged her into. If she was a person she’d be a hardworking business woman with her eye on the clock and perfectly manicured nails. She actually gets a bit stressed if we don’t get down to let her in quickly enough, and you can see her tapping her wristwatch, “What time do you call this!”.

Sam on the other hand grew up semi-feral, in the Golan Heights, and is always half a step away from giving up on civilised life. He is perfectly capable of taking care of his own survival thank you, and yes, you people are handy and I enjoy the carrots etc, but not essential…. So if we don’t get to him in a timely fashion he will just go look for his own way in, crossing ditches, clambering over rock walls, arriving happily home at the back gate, via lord knows where.

It’s not a big deal when the horses wander from time to time. We are surrounded by scrubland and oak trees, not agricultural land, so no harm done. There are no close neighbours or vehicles, let alone busy roads, and honestly, I quite like it that they go explore and get some good grasses. They don’t go far (usually!) and mostly it’s one or two at a time. In the morning they summon us with loud whinnies to come and open the gate and trot up to join the others waiting for breakfast.

So we have always played the game, they get out, we fix the fence, and they respect that until the next time 🙂 But I am a little bit worried that now Sam has got a taste for the nightlife, he has changed the rules of the game and sees finding new sneaky escape routes as a fun way to give us a challenge.

It makes me laugh, I love horses who think for themselves. Although I’m not the one who has to walk the fence, looking for clues as to where the hell….! So what do you say Matte? Game on? Do you think you’ve fixed it now? I guess we’ll see tomorrow.
(Don’t tell Matte I’m rooting for Sam haha)

I have to confess, I am not completely enjoying the winter this year! 😡
And although I like to paint a rosy picture of life on the farm sometimes it’s good to have a little grumble, you have been warned!

Normally, winter is a pleasant relief after the heat and dryness, most days are bright and sunny with a pleasant chill behind them, and then a few days of rain with warmer weather, rinse, repeat. But this year, darn weather is both cold and wet and I’m feeling aggrieved!

Yes, yes rain is good for the land etc and I try not to wish it away but it just gets in the way of doing stuff that needs to be done, like cleaning shrubs or mowing pastures, and the horses are wet and scruffy, and the dogs spread mud everywhere… 🐾

The trials of rustic living, which of course I wouldn’t change for the cleanest house in suburbia, but I just had to get it off my chest and share the less than blissful reality that this can sometimes be….if you’re still with me thank you for listening 🙂

And finally here we are, solstice time, that wonderful deep sinking feeling that comes at the pit of the year. A moment to reflect and renew and enjoy the restful darkness before the sun starts pulling us back towards the light.

If you can, over the next few days spend as much time as you possible in stillness, connecting with your interiority and the rustling underlife of winter. Preferably cosied up next to a fire or watching the planets turn in the night sky, and wait for the coming transition. 2026 is the Year of the Horse, so it’s bound to be spectacular 😄

Hi everybody, how have you been? Have you missed us? Or did you not notice our long radio silence 😊

Yup, the river of life has been flowing along so fast the last couple of months we haven’t had time for the virtual world. But it seems that we’ve reached calmer waters, so time for a catch up.

Last time we posted everything was still dry as a bone and we were wondering if the rain would ever come. Well, it did, and then some, so we’re back to a green landscape. We’ve been catching the tail end of storm Bram the last couple of days so I’m trying hard not to wish the wet weather away and instead counting our blessings in raindrops 🌧️

A bad weather makes it the perfect time for reviewing the year and setting intentions for the next one, sitting cozy around the fire

In fact, on that point , we would love to hear your feedback. If you’ve been a visitor or bought any of our products, we would love to hear what you love, what we could do better, and what you would like to see more of.
Enjoy the pics, just a bit of a photo dumb 😊
