Over the Edge - Aromatics & Distillation - Natural Horses
- Retreats & Reconnect - Osho For more info about the sort of things we're up to go to, www.otefarm.eu

Our home in Portugal is 30 hectares of some of the most beautiful and empty land in Europe. We live with a herd of 9 horses, and are guided by nature in how we care for them, ourselves, our land. We live 'over the edge' always expanding our horizons, outgrowing ourselves and our ideas on a daily basis, exploring, listening, living fully. But we are also practical people, with practical skills and this is a place you can learn practical stuff to use in your daily life. If you are interested in horses and their native needs, essential oils and herbs, or knowing yourself more deeply, come and visit.

Oh hallelujah, happy days! đŸ€©

The bulldozer is here to put us back in shape after all these rains. But it’s not just the thought of roads without ruts that makes me celebrate. We’ve been waiting to clear more space for the horses and do some seeding for ages, but with one thing and another
But this was the year we were definitely going to get there.

It should be easy enough to hire someone for the job (it needs a track tractor/ bulldozer because of the steep hills), land clearing is part of the story hereabouts many. It has to be done legally for fire control, and practically to access the cork trees on harvest years.

However, normally it is done with a disk harrow that rips apart the soil and damages tree roots, with no consideration. We want it to be done with a chain mower with respect for the roots of baby trees and big trees alike, and leaving a nice fine mulch to feed the soil not leach it of life.

Unfortunately some locals are against the mower on principle, and others just haven’t got the equipment. And with so many people competing for the tractors business it was a seller’s market.

We thought we’d found someone to clear and seed in October, which would have been ideal. But suddenly he said he couldn’t do it till April, which is too late to seed and possibly too hot already. We looked elsewhere, many elsewheres.

At one stage it seemed so impossible I was considering going with the brutal method, just to get it bloody well done. Luckily it started raining and I was saved from myself as you can’t do it in the rain, and it rained and it rained and it rained, as you know.

And then, with the great synchronicity that runs our life as a rule, in January we stumbled across a company that could do the job and actually cared about doing it sustainably! It’s so often what happens when things look like they’re not going ‘right’. It’s not a spanner in the wheels, but a gentle brake to give everything time to align.

This guy was set to come end of January, but the rain didn’t stop. There was no point asking when he would come, he had no more idea of when he might be able to do it than we did
. so we waited, seeing another year of regeneration pass us by
And then the call! He was coming on Friday, and wow, here he is! Not always to be counted on in Portugal (or most places to be fair).

And I’m sorry if this is not even a little bit interesting to most of you but to me it’s sooo exciting I wanted to share 🙂
I’ve been waiting years to get to this phase of the regen plan: more grasses, more carbon storage, more movement of animals feeding the grasses and insects and birds with their poo. More life to the land. So I’m happy, and looking forward to greener days.

If you would like to learn more about how we care for the land, the horses or our aromatic plants, come visit. The roads will be totally fixed very soon 😉

It is a gloriously sunny day today and I’ve just been wondering around checking in with all the growing things. To see how the grass is coming along(electric green!), which little flowers are opening their faces and where we’re all at after these week and weeks of rain.
Well, I’m happy to report we’re all good and poised for spring! The mud is drying out at rate with the sun and breeze, we even managed to get the jeep up to camp today. So here we are, ready for you. Time for you to plan your visit.

Do you want to come and do something, like join us distilling essential oils? Or making medicine? You can check out our workshops or design a program just for you.

Or do you want to come and do nothing? Just put your feet, up enjoy the sunshine, meditate, walk in the woods
. Whatever you fancy , Over the Edge Farm is the perfect place to recharge your batteries after this winter. So come and be nourished by wild nature, friendly animals, good food and good company.

We’ve updated the website a bit to make it easier for you to book your room right there, and check out the Come Play page to see all available activities. And if you want to spread the love, go ahead and share this post with all your friends â€ïžđŸ„°đŸŠ„
Meanwhile I’ve got to go see if the wild pear is flowering yet and bathe in blue sky

I’ve had a few people ask how we’re surviving the exciting Portuguese weather at the moment, so thought I would let you all know how we are.
We certainly have had our challenges after weeks of almost constant rain, should I list them?
Nah, you’ll have to come and hear the story of “The Winter it Rained so Hard” from the horses mouths. Luckily I have a saying “When the chips are down the fun just started” and we have all been pulling together through the crunch with love and laughter and the occasional stream of swear words.

A rough overview though for those who want to know: ground is saturated with more deluges on their way, the waterways are all overflowing, the red jeep went for a dive in the creek, Matteo put his back out trying to save it (luckily a pickup came by and pulled him out, car still in hospital but should be ok). Poor Matteo had to be on bedrest though and has missed all the ‘fun’.

Teddy and Dado have heroically managed to keep feeding the horses despite all the mud and running water and coming in drenched to their underwear more than once. The little jeep can still manage to get out to shop through the front entrance (just) but can’t get back in without a tow from the tractor so we leave it at the hay barn, and the tractor brings the shopping up in the bucket.

We are way better off than a lot of people though and every possible disaster has turned out ok with a little ingenuity, and another deep breath, and other blessings. The hills stay well-drained, so horses and humans find respite from the soggy bottom lands, and we’re in no danger of flooding.

Horses have food and shelter as we miraculously stocked up on hay in the 3 days in January it didn’t rain and before the road was impassable. And while the dogs are definitely fed up, and the cats have cabin fever (Joma refuses to go out if it’s raining so has mad spells around the caravan from time to time) they are warm and fed and loved.

Right now, the wind has died down as the light fades over grey clouds and it looks like the rain is taking a break till morning. So that’s OtE sit rep for today. Love from us all đŸ€—

Hanging out with a herd of healthy, happy horses is always deeply relaxing. There is an atmosphere of calm around them, a feeling of being grounded and connected.
You can feel your nervous system settle, your breathing slow and your heart beat more rhythmically. It’s just the way it is, and there’s even science around it if you’re that way inclined.

But when you find the herd in rain-mode the silence goes even deeper. They stand in the lee of a hill, or protected by trees, or in the shelter, completely still, turned in on themselves.
They don’t complain like we humans do, they just quietly let it flow over and around them.
No resistance to what is. Until the raindrops ease, then they stretch and shake and wonder off to find some grasses. What rain? They say.
There is no better meditation teacher than a horse, be present, flow with what is. so simple
.

I’ll Tell you something though, with all this rain we’ve been having it is going to be one magnificent spring! There is nowhere as beautiful as Portugal in spring, the colours the smells, the skies
. And this year will be something else! So I highly recommend you book your visit now.😀

And if you really want to get down with the plant spirits, go for total immersion and join us in one of our workshops. Learn how to distill essential oils and hydrosols and other wild medicine.
But whatever your fancy, - workshops, gentle walks through the woodlands, long hikes over the rolling hills, or just soaking up the sunshine and meditating with the horse as you sit on the deck - dreaming of springtime in Portugal is definitely the best antidote to January.
