How can we make conversations about su***de more accessible to disabled communities — so they, too, can support someone who may be having thoughts of ending their life?

Thanks to a grant from the NCSS 4ST Partnership Fund, Equal Dreams had the opportunity to co-conduct three safeTALK workshops in collaboration with social worker-educator Cheng Hwee Fern. These workshops equipped participants with the skills to recognise and respond to signs of su***de.

Each session was designed with a specific community in mind:
1. The Deaf and hard of hearing community
2. The blind and low vision community
3. The neurodivergent community

To make the training accessible and inclusive, we incorporated features such as:
- Singapore Sign Language interpretation
- Speech-to-text interpretation
- Having a support person who has worked closely with, or identifies as being from the community
- Visual interpretation
- Assistive tech–friendly resources (e.g., screen reader compatibility)
- Calm room for participants needing a sensory break

As our Team Lead Hidayat mentioned, we were heartened to witness how these workshops sparked meaningful discussions on how the experience of su***de might manifest differently within each community. By making this programme accessible, we hope to grow the pool of disabled people who are equipped with su***de prevention skills, so that they can offer support to both within their own communities and beyond.

Our hope for the future? Fern couldn’t have said it better: “Imagine if someone sees a trainer from their own community. That trust and motivation to learn more about su***de prevention would be that much stronger.”
