😳 What history teaches us?
For hundreds of years, scurvy was the terror 😱 of the seas. Sailors would literally fall apart—their old wounds reopening and their teeth falling out ☠️ —because they were trapped on ships without fresh food.
The primary cause of scurvy was the length of voyages. In the 1700s and early 1800s, a sailing ship leaving London for India would take ▶️4 to 6 months. Sailors would go without fresh foods.
Sailors lived on "Salt Beef"🥩(dried out with salt until it was hard as wood) and "Hardtack" (a biscuit baked so dry it could last for years). Fresh food was impossible on ship then as they would rot.
By the 1790s, the British Royal Navy knew that 🍋 lemons and limes🍋🟩 saved sailors. However, a ship carrying thousands of fresh lemons took up too much space and the fruit rotted.
🔍Science fact :
Because humans cannot produce vitamin C, it takes about 🫛4 to 12 weeks🍋 of zero Vitamin C intake for tissue health levels to drop low enough for scurvy to start.
(Vitamin C was not known then)
🩺🔬🌡️ Scientists and naval doctors then took fresh lemon and lime juice and evaporated it over a fire to reduce its volume by 90%. They wanted a "concentrate" that could fit thousands of doses into a single wooden barrel to save space on ships.
They failed as the sailors who drank that concentrate still had scurvy, some died.
🔍Science fact :
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is thermally unstable. When you subject lemon juice to 100°C (boiling) for the hours required to make a syrup, the heat breaks the covalent bonds of the molecule.
🚢 Great invention followed later! 🗞️
The first commercial refrigeration on ships began in the 1880s (notably for the meat trade between Australia/Argentina and UK).
By the early 1900s, 🚢steamships were ▶️faster and had cold storage!
🌼 Yay! 😀 cold storage meant sailors could have fresh foods!
When the Suez Canal opened in 1869, it cut the trip from Europe to India from 6 months down to about ▶️3 to 4 weeks!
So much faster !
Meaning sailors won’t have scurvy anymore as they dont have to skip fresh foods (containing viramin C) for more than 4 weeks !!!
Fact :
The above logistical and engineering advancement with massive geographical advantages - meant no more scurvy
Steamships and refrigerators on ships saved sailors!
I would give a top 🥇 award to inventors of Steamships and refrigerators !
But No, no one gave them , engineers , credit for solving Scurvy 🛟, sadly.
Then later on, after scurvy had already died down….
In 1934, scientists claim to solve Scurvy by isolating a single molecule: Ascorbic Acid. It was a 'chemical life jacket' for people in a state of total biological collapse. It was a miracle for the 1930s, and for that specific crisis: Scurvy.
What I learn:
Many times in history we see how the real heros are not rewarded.
😖😤😰Just because engineers are not scientists , they did not get credit at all for solving scurvy.
Vitamin C was needed later during World War II. Okay Yay, luckily this pill was invented - to solve scurvy but not for commercial sailors anymore.
1939 (The Crisis): WWII begins.
Millions of soldiers are trapped in trenches and deserts with zero access to fresh fruit.
1940–1945 (The Solution): The military becomes the top customer for the 1934 "Synthetic Pill." They didn't need "Vitality"—they just needed to stop Trench Scurvy from crippling the army.
1945–Present (The Pivot): When the war ended, the factories were already built. The industry simply rebranded Wartime Rations as Daily Wellness.
People no longer have scurvy.
Who then promoted vitamin C pills after that period?
In the 1970s, a double-Nobel Prize winner named Linus Pauling published a book claiming that massive doses of Vitamin C could cure the common cold and even cancer.
☠️🔍The Science: Most of his claims were later debunked or found to be highly exaggerated.
😖😤The Impact: Tragically, because he was a famous scientist, people believed him. The industry pivoted from selling "10mg to prevent scurvy" to "1,000mg to prevent a cold."
The Tragic Result? This created the "Potency Era." People started buying "quantity" because they didn't understand "quality."
Today, 1000mg vitamin C pills fill the retail shelves. People who still believed in the debunked narrative just because he was a scientist buys those bottles of pills.
What I learn:
Blind faith is pretty stubborn. Decisions are not based on facts but on hear say.
Sad. Really heart breaking 💔 to watch.
‼️Today’s Facts:
🍏It is almost impossible not to get 10mg of Vitamin C in 2026, which is why the 1,000mg "Mega-Dose" logic feels so outdated.
🍇To put it in perspective, the amount of Vitamin C needed to stop your teeth from falling out (the "Survival Dose") is roughly the size of a grain of salt.
Yes! It’s that little!
The medical consensus (established by the World Health Organization and the NIH) is :
✅As little as 10mg of Vitamin C per day is enough to prevent the clinical symptoms of scurvy in most adults.
🍊If you eat one orange, you’ve already given your body 700% of the Vitamin C it needs to prevent scurvy.
🥦One cup of Broccoli? That’s 800%.
🥬Even a side of Bok Choy at the hawker center gives you 4.5 times the survival dose.
We are surrounded by Vitamin C 'intelligence' every single day !!!!
❌❌You don't need a 10,000% 'chemical flood.' You need the Whole Food Matrix. In a plant like Broccoli or an Orange, the Vitamin C is wrapped in
🥕fiber, 🫑bioflavonoids, and enzymes.
This 'Biological Package' tells your body how to absorb it slowly and effectively.
Be kind to yourself.
Don't drown your immune system; be better informed, and nourish it
Choose the matrix, not the fragment.
💦💕And Power up your happiness🍅💦
Forward it to someone dear to you.
You might be the silent hero.
Though you didnt invent steamships nor cold 🥶 storage😜,
passing on this message may save lives 💖
