When was your last eye check?

Today is World Sight Day - a good reminder to get your eyes examined if you have not already done so. Regular eye exams can help to pick up early signs of disease and preserve vision. It’s time to be aware of your own eye health and

Is there a direct association between digital screen time and myopia?

Myopia, or short-sightedness, is increasing in prevalence throughout the world. Family history, ethnic background, environment (living indoors, in cities) and carrying out near tasks, such as screen use, have all been linked to the development of myopia.

There is currently no clear evidence to suggest that screen time alone is the direct cause. However, there is good evidence to suggest that children who spend more time outdoors are at lower risk of developing myopia.

Cosmetic contact lenses include coloured, patterned or novelty contact lenses. You should take the same degree of care when buying and wearing these lenses as with any other contact lenses.

To help ensure safe use of cosmetic lenses:
• Purchase from a legitimate store where there is a registered medical practitioner or optometrist on the premises
• Have the lenses fitted by a qualified professional who can also provide ongoing aftercare
• Follow all recommended lens wear instructions and care advice
• Attend regular checkups
• Never share or swap lenses with others

Most of us are aware of how UV can damage our skin. But many people don’t realise that UV light can also damage our eyes. We now know that being exposed to too much UV increases our chances of developing eye problems so it’s important to protect our eyes from the sun, even on cloudy days.

It is recommended to wear sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection. This is important even if you are wearing contact lenses with a UV filter, because the sunglasses will help protect the skin around your eyes, as well as the eye itself. It is especially important for children to wear sunglasses because their pupils are bigger than adults’, making the risk of sun damage higher.

Lining your eyelid margins with eyeliner or eyeshadow, otherwise known as “waterlining” or “tightlining” should be avoided as it can cause eye irritation and reduce the secretion of oils into our tears. There is also a risk of developing infections if the oil glands that line the eyelid margins are consistently blocked.

A slit lamp examination usually forms part of a comprehensive eye exam. Our optometrists use the slit lamp to observe the eyes in detail and determine if there are any abnormalities. A range of conditions can be detected by carrying out a slit lamp exam, these include cataracts, dry eyes and corneal injury or disease.

Smoking, and exposure to smoke, significantly increases your chances of developing eye disease and suffering sight loss. It’s never too late to benefit from stopping. But the sooner you stop, the better the outcome is likely to be.

Whether you are a current smoker, an ex-smoker or have never smoked, it is important you visit your optometrist regularly. They will check the health of your eyes as part of your sight test. This will help protect your sight and identify any conditions early, when treatment is more likely to be more effective.

Maintaining the hygiene of your lens case is important to ensure safe contact lens wear. You should ideally clean your lens case after each use by following the steps below:

• Refill case with fresh multi-purpose solution
• With a clean finger, thoroughly rub the interior of the case to dislodge any debris or biofilm buildup
• Discard the solution and rinse the case generously with fresh multi-purpose solution
• Leave the case to air-dry upside down with the caps off in a clean environment (avoid the bathroom)

You should avoid cleaning your lens case with water. Certain microorganisms that exist in water can cause serious eye infections and loss of vision.
