Are Citrus Essential Oils Too Strong for Skin?

You may have heard that citrus essential oils — like lemon, orange, or mandarin — are too strong or unsafe to use on your skin.

🍋 This is partly true.
Some citrus oils, especially lemon, lime, and bitter orange, can irritate the skin or cause sun sensitivity. This is because they contain natural chemicals called furanocoumarins, which can react with sunlight and may cause redness or burns if applied before sun exposure.

🍊 But not all citrus oils are the same.
Red Mandarin essential oil (Citrus reticulata) is considered one of the gentlest citrus oils. The cold-pressed oil contains low levels of furanocoumarins, which means it has a low risk of sun sensitivity. Many aromatherapists use red mandarin safely with children, during pregnancy, or on sensitive skin — always properly diluted in a carrier oil.

✅ So, the truth is:
Some citrus oils do need extra care, especially in sunlight. But Red Mandarin is a gentle and safe choice when used the right way.

💡 Tip: Always dilute essential oils before using them on the skin. If you're unsure about sun safety, apply at night or only on areas covered by clothing.
🧑‍⚕️ And if you’re ever in doubt, always seek guidance from a certified aromatherapist — they are trained to help you use oils safely and effectively.

🍊3 Easy Ways to Use Mandarin Essential Oil at Home...

Mandarin essential oil is gentle, sweet-smelling, and easy to use — even if you’re new to aromatherapy. Here are 3 safe and simple ways to try it at home:

😴 1. To feel calm or sleep better:
Use in a 100ml water diffuser before bed. Try this blend:
3 drops Mandarin
1 drop Lavender
1 drop Frankincense
→ Helps create a peaceful, relaxing space.

🧴 2. For glowing, happy skin:
At night, add 1 drop of Mandarin oil to a small amount (e.g. 5ml) of face cream or carrier oil (like jojoba, rosehip oil etc.).
→ Gently apply to your face.
⚠️Avoid sunlight after using citrus oils on skin.

💆 3. For gentle belly massage:
Mix 2 drops Mandarin oil, 2 drops Ginger Oil, and 1 drop of Peppermint Oil with 10ml of carrier oil.
→ Rub gently on your belly to ease tension or bloating.

✅ Tip: Always mix essential oils with a carrier oil before using on your skin, and do a patch test if it’s your first time.

Why gentle oils can feel better after long periods of stress

When someone has been stressed for a long time, the body can become more sensitive.
Strong smells or very intense scents may feel too much, instead of being calming.

Gentle essential oils work differently. They do not try to change how you feel right away. Instead, they help your body slow down and relax naturally.

One example of a gentle oil is lavender.

Lavender is often thought of as a simple or common oil, but that is exactly why it works well. Its scent is soft, familiar, and comforting. For people who feel tired, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained, this softness matters.

Strong or sharp scents can sometimes add to the stress. Lavender supports calm quietly, without demanding attention. It allows the body to relax in its own time.

In aromatherapy, more strength does not always mean better results.
Sometimes, gentle support is exactly what the body needs.

January — Bergamot | Getting the Beginning Right

Bergamot is interesting not because of how strong it is, but because of how carefully it is made.

Most bergamot oil is taken from the peel of the fruit using a cold-press method. This keeps the aroma close to the original citrus peel, but it also means the oil contains natural compounds like bergapten, which require careful use.

Bergamot can also be steam distilled or further processed to remove bergapten. This creates what is known as bergapten-free (FCF) bergamot. The aroma is slightly cleaner and more controlled, and the oil is easier to use in more situations.

These different methods don’t make one oil better than the other.
They simply serve different purposes.

In blending, bergamot is often used at the very start. It appears first, helps organise the scent, and prepares the space for what comes next — even if you don’t notice it directly.

January works the same way.
Before moving forward, it’s worth setting things up properly.

Bergamot reminds us that a good beginning doesn’t need to be loud —
it just needs to be right.

As the final day of the year arrives, we pause—not to rush forward, but to breathe, reflect, and gently release.

This year has carried its own blend of challenges, growth, learning, and quiet resilience. In aromatherapy, we are reminded that balance is never forced—it is cultivated, drop by drop, breath by breath.

Today is an invitation to:

Let go of what no longer serves your body or mind

Honour the effort you’ve given, even when progress felt slow

Set intentions rooted in wellbeing, not pressure

As we step into a new year, may your days be guided by clarity, grounded energy, and mindful self-care.

Thank you for being part of the HAAS community. We look forward to continuing this journey of holistic wellbeing together in the year ahead.

In the heart of winter, Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal. Native to the cool highlands and forests of Northern Europe, this evergreen thrives where few others endure — its roots anchored deep in rocky soil, its branches reaching calmly toward the sky.

The essential oil, distilled from its needles and twigs, carries a crisp, resinous scent with earthy undertones — an aroma that clears the air and awakens the senses. In aromatherapy, Scots Pine is known for its ability to balance, strengthen, and uplift the emotional state.

Emotional Benefits of Scots Pine:
👉Restores clarity: Helps dispel mental fatigue and emotional fog, encouraging fresh perspective and focus.

👉Grounds the spirit: Promotes inner stability and resilience during periods of stress or uncertainty.

👉Releases tension: Opens the chest for deeper breathing, helping the body and mind to exhale built-up pressure.

👉Uplifts energy: Its forest-fresh scent reconnects us to vitality and optimism — especially during darker, colder months.

When diffused, Scots Pine invites a quiet courage — a calm strength that doesn’t resist the wind, but stands firm within it.

This December, let its scent remind you: peace is not found in escape, but in presence — rooted, breathing, and still. 🌿

🌲The Strength of Scots Pine 🌲
This December, we celebrate Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) — a symbol of renewal, resilience, and clarity.

As winter settles in, Scots Pine reminds us that even in stillness, life continues to flow with quiet strength.

Known as one of the oldest living conifers in Europe, its clean, invigorating aroma clears the air and awakens the senses — a natural tonic for both body and mind.
