Worried your child doesn't want to try new things?

One way to help get kids comfortable trying new things is to involve them in the preparation.

Kids are excited about what they create when they help in the kitchen...even if it is a new food.

Getting your child comfortable with new foods can take time as most toddlers go through a period of not wanting to try new things and stop eating a lot of foods. Keep meals pressure-free and allow them to try on their terms. There may be days that they try something on their first try and others that it takes months of exposure for them to try something.

This was a new item we had recently. My LO made it at camp and was excited to try it. A few spoons in and he said he didn't like it. Then he saw Mom and Dad enjoy it and how we ate bites deep into the dish instead of just skimming the top and he had a new favourite dish. 🤣

Involving him in the preparation and modeling at it's best. 😊

How do you see this picture?

A child playing with food?

Or

A child meeting their needs and filling their tummy?

How would you react?

Allowing children to experiment can be difficult for parents. Potentially triggering. As adults we often have specific ideas of how food should be consumed which may be very different than your child's.

This was an example I saw the other day. There was salsa served with the chips, but the kids decided to "dip" the chips in their drink instead.

If you see it as a child playing with food, you will likely react negatively.

If you see it as a child meeting their need, you will likely be relaxed and enjoying snack time with your child.

How do you want to see this?

Food should be fun. Who wouldn't want to try these adorable doggies?!

Getting kids involved in the kitchen teaches them lots of skills and you can make fun foods too.

Have you ever watched a young kid choose ice cream even if they are not able to read the names and may not even know what flavour it is.

Young kids choose foods to eat that looks goods to them at the time.

They don't learn to eat by name, but by visual appeal and often they enjoy the food they choose if left to make their own decisions and opinions. They learn to like specific things by the way people around them act and what they say.

What is your automatic reaction to your child's choice? Do you comment? Or do you let your child form their own opinion?

It's mango season and we have been eating a lot in many different preparations. Some ways are liked, some are not liked and preferences are different from person to person.

Teaching kids that everyone has preferences and they differ from person to person allows kids to learn that it's okay to like something or not. And this can change from day to day and meal to meal.

What is your favourite way to eat mangoes?

Fruit can be tricky as sometimes it's sweet and sometimes it's not. What do you do with a batch of fruit that is not sweet? Make something with it.

Have some blueberries this week which are tart, so made a lemon blueberry pound cake.

What is your favourite recipe for using either tart or overripe fruit?

So happy to be back to eating out again.

Have you had the urge to eat out over the past 5 weeks? But we couldn't. This is the feeling of restriction.

Feeling restricted makes us want to do what we cannot - if it means eating out or eating a certain food.

It is the reason why adults have challenges when they are trying to lose weight or adapting to a new diet for a condition.

It is also one of the most common reasons parents and children have mealtime battles.

Has the past 5 weeks been tough for you? What did you really want to eat today?

Happy Friday!

Trying new foods can be daunting even for adults. You may like the new food or you may not. Either is okay.

A common phrase I use is 'all people have different tastes and some may enjoy something that another does not.' It is good for kids to learn it's okay to say I don't want to try or eat any more, but not okay to say something is gross or any other similar adjective as someone else may enjoy that food.

Have you tried this fruit? What did you think?

What we say to kids can leave a lasting impact. Eating is one of the areas that kids can be affected as we can shame kids for their natural body functions and needs - often unconsciously.

Some interesting realisations from parents that were food related that induced shame were:
Stopping the flow of an activity, or withholding resources, including food, while waiting for “magic words”
Asking “where are your manners?”
Judging the amount of food being eaten – “really? That’s a lot of food!” or “I can’t believe you’re hungry again” or “You’re so tiny! Eat up or you will never grow!”
Tying food in with activities or rewards – “If you don’t eat your lunch you won’t be able to go outside with your friends”

Do you use any of these tactics?

Have fun with your food! Make food fun and tasty. Often we give food to kids that is not that tasty and then wonder why they don't like it.

If you have fruit that is not very sweet, baking with it is a good way to use it and make it taste good. When kids have positive associations with fruit, they are more likely to eat it and want to eat it in the future.

What is your favourite way to cook with fruit?
