Project CHAIRity Project CHAIRity 2014 - Service Learning Project with Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA)

projectchairity2014@gmail.com

We are a group of Secondary 4 students from Hwa Chong Institution and we are collaborating with the Handicaps Welfare Association (HWA) for our Service Learning Project. Many people often do not look beyond the physical aspect of physical disabilities and overlook the emotional well-being of people with physical disabilities. Unfortunately, this creates a barrier and many people do not understand what physically disabled people face in their daily lives. Many people also fear that talking about the disability will be touching a taboo subject and this leads to a lack of knowledge and understanding. Ultimately, people with physical disabilities often suffer from a lack of interaction, stemming from the lack of empathy. Therefore, our project is here not only to help be there for the physically disabled, but to create awareness about the situation these people are facing. Through the interaction sessions and events we hold, we hope to be able to impact their lives in a positive way and have a fruitful and fulfilling journey along the way. The Wheel, Walk or Jog 2014 was an enriching experience and our group was placed in charge of logistics. We managed to recruit a number of volunteers who helped with the warm-up exercises, the setting up of the venue and the transport of items. Despite the rain, our moods weren't dampened and there were entertaining performances that many of us enjoyed. We would like to thank HWA for giving us the opportunity to serve and we would also like to thank the volunteers from HCI Scouts for their hard work and perseverance. Hope everyone at the WWJ enjoyed themselves and had a truly wonderful time!

Yesterday, on the 30th of April, our group, together with Shaun Pek, went down to HWA to help with the packing of the goodie bags for WWJ 2014. Although it was an arduous 3 hours of packing 500 goodie bags, it was certainly a new experience for all of us. The WWJ will take place on the 18th of May and we hope to see you there!
