Traditionally, UTI is diagnosed with urinalysis followed by urine culture. However, this method has some challenges. For one, it takes a 1 - 2 days to get results. Additionally, the limited sensitivity of urine culture may not detect low levels of bacteria in the urine. There's also a risk of false negatives (30-50%) due to contamination or inadequate urine collection.

That's where PCR comes in. PCR is a rapid diagnostic test that can detect UTI-causing bacteria with high sensitivity and specificity. It detects slow growing or difficult to culture pathogens. PCR results can be obtained in just a few hours, allowing for prompt treatment and better patient outcomes.
