At Learning to Learn Singapore. We pride ourselves at delivering quality ABA service that is effective.
What did we do?
1) At the start, we focus a lot on making vocalization rewarding. Whenever the child vocalizes, a reward is presented to him. This creates a high motivation environment that encourages vocalization.
2) Next, we start getting the child point to pictures. The child can choose whichever item he wants. He learned that he has control. Whenever he points to a particular item and makes a vocalization, we present that particular item to him. At this stage, the child learned that he has control, there is no need to fuss, and he can get what he wants. Simply by pointing and making a sound.
3) Concurrently, we establish imitation as rewarding as well. Whenever the child imitates our actions, he receives a reward as well. Because the pattern was established -- copy then reward. We then shifted the demand to imitating sounds 😊
4) Next, because now the child is more willing to imitate our sounds, we can teach the child to point to the pictures and label it as "ipad", "water", "toilet". This way, the child associates the words over time to the actual events
5) Now, the child can independently request about 3 to 5 items that he desires.
Move work needs to be done, but it has been a very promising start. 😊
