How does CBT Help with IBS?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological intervention that helps to reduce our negative thoughts and stress reactions.

Benefits of CBT in managing IBS symptoms via gut-brain connection have been found to be sustained after interventions ended.

There are certain challenges that IBS may bring to our work.

Sometimes the symptoms may act up and disrupt our work. For some of us, the need for frequent visits to the washroom may be a hassle.

On the other hand, stress at work may trigger IBS symptoms through the gut-brain axis.

Want to know more? We explore this in depth in CBT sessions at Mind Over Gut.

Mind Over Gut Tip of the Week

This week, try:
Reminding yourself about benefits of approaching a fear situation (e.g., eating at a new place where you do not know where the washroom is) to keep yourself going.

Focusing on the potential benefits can help us remain motivated and on track to keep facing feared situations so that we increase activities and reduce the limitations that IBS created in our life.

Try it for a few days — and watch yourself progress!

How does IBS affect our emotions?

IBS symptoms can make us feel that our body is uncontrollable and unreliable and make us feel anxious. Or it might make us feel that because our body is "faulty" we are a failure and our mood become low.

When our mood is affected it generates a negative feedback loop that feedback to trigger the IBS symptoms through the brain-gut axis.

In CBT, we learn ways to manage self criticism to break this loop.

What is Eustress?

Eustress is a positive form of stress. It is where we feel motivated and energized to pursue or engage in something.

Happy events like celebrations, or festive seasons, can be a form of eustress when we are excited and look forward to it. Ironically, our body might not distinguish between eustress and negative stress (distress), and react in a stress manner regardless. This is why during happy events or "non-stressful" event, we might have IBS symptoms.

Want to know more? In Mind Over Gut, we help individuals make sense, identify and manage eustress events and related IBS symptoms.
