Tensions are reportedly high along the Sierra Leone–Guinea border following the detention of several Sierra Leonean security personnel by Guinean authorities after a disputed military deployment in Falaba District.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, February 23, 2026, at Kaliyereh Village in Sulima Chiefdom, has drawn attention to longstanding boundary concerns between the two neighbouring states.

According to our correspondent in Koinadugu District, the situation unfolded after the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) established a security checkpoint at Kaliyereh Village, a location Sierra Leone considers to be within its territorial jurisdiction.

However, Guinean troops reportedly challenged the move, arguing that the area falls within the territory of the Guinean Armed Forces. The Guinean side is said to have requested geographical proof, including GPS coordinates, to substantiate Sierra Leone’s claim before any checkpoint could be mounted.

Despite the objection, the checkpoint was set up, a development that allegedly prompted Guinean forces to detain an RSLAF captain along with other military personnel. The arrested officers were reportedly transported to Conakry.

Sources indicate that 13 Sierra Leonean military personnel and two officers from the Operational Support Division (OSD) of the Sierra Leone Police are currently in Guinean custody.

The border area remains tense as authorities from both countries are expected to engage diplomatically to address the situation and prevent further escalation.

Gbangbatoke Community Hosts Inspirational Ramadan Program

The Gbangbatoke community warmly welcomed Samon, representing Sheik Alhaji Umal Farum Bah from Freetown, during a significant event held today at the Gbangbatoke N.A Court Barray. The program, conducted in open speech about Islam, was coordinated by the Youth Network for Better Change and drew participation from community members, youths, authorities, Mosques, and local police.
The event aimed to strengthen Islamic teachings and community engagement during the holy month of Ramadan Kareem, inspiring unity and reflection among attendees.
Special thanks are extended to Mr. Abdul Nariu Mansaray, the former Youths Chairman, for his exceptional efforts in organizing this program. The community applauds his commitment and hopes others will rise to support similar initiatives, making such gatherings a regular feature throughout the Chiefdom during Ramadan.
The Youth Network for Better Change played a central role in coordinating the event, and the organizers are grateful to the Speaker for accepting the invitation, as well as all authorities and youth members whose presence and support made the program a success.
