The Ministry of Health (MoH) today extended its ongoing support initiative to the JMB Pediatric Center of Excellence, providing free food items and essential provisions to healthcare workers on night duty.

This gesture is part of the Ministry’s broader effort to ensure that staff working overnight in critical care facilities remain motivated and adequately supported as they continue delivering quality services to patients—especially vulnerable children receiving care at the Center.

According to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer (Clinical), Dr. Mustapha Kabba, the distribution serves as a practical way of acknowledging the dedication and sacrifice of healthcare providers who work beyond regular hours, often under challenging conditions. “It also aims to ease logistical constraints, such as access to food during late-night shifts,” said Dr. Kabba.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to improving staff welfare and strengthening service delivery across all healthcare facilities, including specialized institutions like the Julius Maada Bio Pediatric Center of Excellence.

The initiative, which has been rolled out across several facilities, forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to motivate and support staff who shoulder the demanding responsibilities of night-time healthcare delivery. By providing meals and basic provisions, the MoH aims to enhance staff morale and help ensure that patients continue to receive the highest quality of care throughout the night.

According to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer–Clinical, Dr. Mustapha Kabba, the gesture is both a practical intervention and a heartfelt expression of gratitude.

“It is also a way of acknowledging the dedication and hard work of healthcare workers who are determined to give their best but constrained by logistics, including food,” Dr. Kabba noted.

Healthcare workers welcomed the supplies, describing them as timely and encouraging, especially during long and demanding overnight shifts. The Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening staff welfare as a key pillar in improving overall service delivery in hospitals nationwide.

This morning, the Ministry of Health (MoH) started a free distribution of food items, including provisions, snacks, to healthcare providers working on night shifts at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) and the Ola During Children’s Hospitals providing free healthcare in Freetown.

This kindness, which is for Free Healthcare Facilities in Freetown including PCMH, ODCH, King Herman Road Hospital, Rokupa and JMB Hospitals, is part of the MoH’s strategy to encourage and support staff serving night duties to concentrate on the job and provide best quality services to their patients.

“It is also a way of acknowledging the dedication and hard work of healthcare workers who are determined to give their best but constrained by logistics including food,” says Dr. Mustapha Kabba, Deputy Chief Medical Officer-Clinical.

According to Dr. Kabba, the donation is an initiative that has been in existence in the past, but stopped at some point due to funding issues. Now, MoH has raised some funds to support this brilliant idea in order to keep health workers happy.

After the handing over of the items today, the hospital staff expressed gratitude, emphasizing how such gestures could boost morale, confidence and provide much-needed encouragement at work in this challenging financial times.

achieves a historic milestone in the elimination of as the Minister of Health, Austin Demby, PhD, MPH, earlier today launched the Integrated Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination campaign in Freetown ushering in a new era of hope towards eradicating the disease.

With this launch, the Minister and his team are now targeting to vaccinate over 1 million girls between the ages of 11 to 18 years from across the country.

Already, Cervical Cancer is a growing public health concern in Sierra Leone. It is rated the second most common cancer among women ages 15 to 44 years. World Diabetes Day 2025: Empowering Communities for a Healthier Future

Every year on 14 November, the world commemorates World Diabetes Day, a global campaign that raises awareness of the growing impact of diabetes and promotes access to care, prevention, and early diagnosis. As diabetes continues to rise at alarming rates, World Diabetes Day 2025 carries a timely and urgent message: “Diabetes and Wellbeing.”

Today, more than 540 million adults worldwide are living with diabetes—a number projected to exceed 640 million by 2030 if urgent measures are not taken. Behind these statistics are families, communities, and health systems struggling to manage the financial, emotional, and medical burdens of this chronic disease.

Sierra Leone, like many countries in the region, is witnessing a rising trend in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes. The Ministry of Health and its partners continue to increase screening for diabetes and hypertension, train healthcare workers in NCD management, promote healthy lifestyle campaigns, and strengthen data collection and disease surveillance.

However, gaps remain in access to insulin, diagnostic equipment, nutrition counselling, and public awareness. World Diabetes Day 2025 underscores the need for sustained investment in NCD care, health promotion, and early detection.

As the world marks World Diabetes Day 2025, one message stands clear: diabetes is manageable, preventable for many, and its complications are avoidable with the right care.

By empowering communities, strengthening health systems, and ensuring equitable access to care, ’s can build a healthier future for all.
