Was recounting the beautiful story of Amelia Dawley, the woman who unknowingly connected her Georgia family to an ancestral tribe in Sierra Leone through a song that she sang to her child that was excavated by music anthropologists over 30 years later. It reminded me of the length of time that it can take to reconnect, to learn our ancestors names, or feel connected. I hope you check out this ep and feel inspired as I did recording it and listening back. 🤍

Let’s start with the beautiful ancestral reclamation story of Amelia Dawley to remind us that time is actually on our side…then discuss this critical moment of the attack on “witchcraft” happening abroad and closer to home than we think. I’ve been so busy taking my time in Senegal that I haven’t had a chance to make a proper post about my first book event on the CONTINENT (and this still isn’t that 😭)

No new ep of this week (we’ll be back NYE!) but here’s a clip from my book talk in Maristes two weeks ago moderated by my sister and . Awa ended our talk with “is juju political?” and I so appreciated this thoughtful question to round out a discussion that I learned SO much from. More pics and proper posts to come from this world opening event, but join my pay-tree-on to read my reflections on this really monumental book talk for me.

Enjoy your holiday season, I hope it’s joyous and I hope you take your joy so seriously that you’re willing to fight for it. 🤍

Olodumare bless the singers, bless the actors, bless the arts! Opening night of Porgy and Bess at the Met was nothing short of phenomenal. Second time enjoying a beautiful show here (first time thanks to ) and second time thanks to my love. When life is bleak it’s always the theatre that wakes it up! 🥹 if I wasn’t a full time spiritual practitioner, I would have loved to sing opera and I’m officially adding some Porgy and Bess songs to practice in my singing lessons. One day I’ll talk about the healing work that’s been happening for me/to me/ with me in singing lessons thanks to my wonderful vocal coach I’ve been realizing how much fear and making myself small still lives within me thanks to singing. Whew Osun is working on me ooo and requiring me to sing sing sing. One day I will let you hear it, until then thank goodness there are artists who operate in their big gifts of song

ORE YEYE OSUN O! Two years with Osun and a lifetime to go. My mother who NEVER lets me fetch dirty water, Osun alawoye who washes her bronze before the child, OSUN the first hair stylist, the first the first doula, OSUN THE HEALER!

This Odun was so special because she addressed all my worries, lifted me up, cleaned me off and then in traditional Osun fashion healed the group 😂 AND my wonderful mat mate was there who I shared this sacred moment with two years ago

Thank you to my spiritual family, elders, and Osun Alawoye for choosing me as your delegate! Iba to my sister friend and Olori for your fierce and reliable leadership as you usher the collective to know the name of our great mother!

I cannot wait to see how she continues to transform my life and the lives around me. ORE YEYEEEEE OOOOO

October showed me what I was made of. October wowed me. She showed me the value of expanding my own capacity. Not in an overworked downtrodden way but in a “if you want to have a village you must be a villager way.” Hoodoo heritage month renewed my sense of self and my ministry. It anchored me in what’s possible and reminded me that I’m a child of to***co cotton, and sugar cane (spirit power, resilience, and sweet!!!!) HHM grounded me that the work is never done, but the work is good. D’Angelo reminded me that good art don’t die, and the revolution may not be televised but there will be a backtrack (drum). My friends across the world continue to confirm that a pan African framework is crucial, what happens there happens here and vice versa, and to get in your prayer closets, come out, and do the thing, your thing. October reminded me that we must write it down, and often. “The opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation!!!!”
