Germany Issues Travel Warning for Ethiopia Amid Security Concerns

The German government has issued a travel advisory warning its citizens against travelling to Ethiopia, citing ongoing security risks, armed conflicts, and political unrest in various parts of the country.

Authorities specifically advised against travel to the Somali, Oromia, Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambela, western Tigray regions, and parts of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region (SNNPR).

German officials further recommended that travellers who must enter Ethiopia remain confined to the capital, Addis Ababa, and avoid venturing into affected regions.

Somaliland Cabinet Holds 42nd Session, Reviews Security, Economy, Drought and Key Policy Matters

The 42nd session of the Somaliland Cabinet, chaired by President Cabdiraxmaan Maxamed Cabdillaahi (Cirro), convened today at the Presidential Palace, with ministers delivering updates on national security, economic performance, drought conditions, livestock exports, public health and upcoming development initiatives.

National Security Briefing

The Minister of Interior, Cabdalle Maxamed Carab, reported that Somaliland’s security situation remains calm and stable, with no major threats posed to national safety.

Economic and Revenue Update

Finance Minister Cabdilaahi Xasan Aadan presented an overview of state revenue from January to October, noting that collections are progressing in line with the 2025 budget forecast.
He confirmed that the 2026 national budget has been fully completed and will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for discussion and approval.
The Minister also briefed the session on recent engagements in Dubai aimed at strengthening bilateral economic cooperation and enhancing Somaliland’s revenue and infrastructure capabilities.

Drought Situation Worsens

The Minister of Religious Affairs and member of the National Drought Response Committee, Sheekh Cabdullaahi-Baashe Daahir, warned that drought conditions are deepening across all regions. He stressed the urgency of a coordinated national relief effort to support affected communities.

Livestock Export Framework

The Minister of Livestock, Dr Cumar Shucayb Maxamed, emphasised the need to upgrade the country’s export system and infrastructure, describing the sector as central to the national economy.
He cautioned that the prolonged drought has significantly affected both livestock numbers and quality, calling for a national strategy to protect the sector.

Public Health Update

The Minister of Health, Dr Xuseen Bashiir Xirsi, reported slight reductions in cases of measles, cholera and malaria. He noted ongoing preventive measures and public health campaigns led by the ministry.

Somaliland Parliamentary Delegation Visits Embassy in Kenya

A high-level delegation from Somaliland’s House of Representatives has paid an official visit to the country’s embassy in Nairobi as part of a working trip to Kenya.

The delegation, led by the First Deputy Speaker of the House, Siciid Mire Faarax (Giire), was accompanied by several MPs currently engaged in parliamentary duties in the Kenyan capital.

During the visit, the delegation was received by Somaliland’s Ambassador and Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, who briefed the officials on the embassy’s ongoing diplomatic work, consular services, and support provided to Somaliland citizens living in the country.

Deputy Speaker Faarax thanked the embassy leadership for the warm reception and praised their continued efforts in representing Somaliland’s interests abroad. He encouraged the diplomatic mission to further strengthen its outreach and enhance services offered to Somaliland nationals.

Somaliland Ports Authority to Introduce Digital Cargo Tracking System

The Somaliland Ports Authority has announced plans to implement a new Electronic Cargo Tracking Note (ECTN) system, a digital platform designed to record and monitor all cargo destined for the country before vessels arrive at Somaliland ports.

According to the Authority’s Managing Director, Cali Diiriye Axmed, the system will require every shipment to be registered electronically at its point of origin. Officials say the move is aimed at improving cargo transparency, reducing corruption risks, and minimising delays and disputes related to freight handling.

The ECTN system is widely used in several countries to ensure that port authorities receive accurate cargo information in advance, enabling better planning, monitoring, and security screening.

Somaliland officials say the reform is part of ongoing efforts to modernise port operations and enhance efficiency along the Berbera trade corridor.

Somaliland Advances Trade and Logistics Sector with New Operationalization Initiative

Somaliland has taken a significant step to strengthen its trade and logistics sector, holding an Operationalization Meeting led by the Ministry of Commerce and Tourism in partnership with international consultancy Triple Line Consulting. The meeting took place at Hargeisa’s Serene Savovar Hotel.

The initiative follows a Trade and Logistics Platform conference held in July 2025, and focuses on accelerating sector reforms, including the launch of SELSA (Somaliland Exporters and Logistics Sectoral Association). SELSA aims to unify exporters, transport operators, logistics companies, and government agencies to improve coordination, efficiency, and competitiveness across Somaliland’s trade corridors.

The meeting brought together government officials, private sector representatives, financial institutions, freight forwarders, and international partners. Minister Abdirahman Hassan Nour, who opened the session, stressed the importance of public-private collaboration to enhance operational efficiency and ensure that the Berbera Port and Corridor can compete with regional trade routes.

Key discussions included sector management structures, SELSA’s operational framework, and immediate action plans for the next three months to accelerate trade and logistics activities. Participants also outlined strategies to increase transparency, cooperation, and competitiveness within Somaliland’s commercial sector.

The Ministry highlighted that strengthening trade and logistics infrastructure is a cornerstone of Somaliland’s economic development strategy, reinforcing its position as a stable and growing trading hub in the Horn of Africa.

CNN Report Highlights Somaliland’s Stability and Governance Progress

The US broadcaster CNN has released a report outlining what it describes as significant progress in Somaliland’s governance, stability, and suitability as a destination for international travellers.

The report, cited by the Somaliland News Agency (SOLNA), draws a sharp contrast between Somaliland’s relative calm and the insecurity that has persisted in Somalia since 1991. CNN noted that Somalia continues to face challenges including militancy, piracy, and recurrent kidnappings, while Somaliland has maintained order and functional state institutions.

According to CNN, Somaliland has developed a democratic system in which leaders are elected through competitive polls, supported by security forces operating under a structured chain of command. The territory’s use of its own currency was also highlighted as a marker of administrative independence.

Deeqa Xasan Cabdi, one of Somaliland’s leading female tour operators, told the network that widespread misconceptions remain about the region, with many outsiders confusing Somaliland with Somalia. She said Somaliland is “peaceful, safe, and fundamentally different,” adding that tourism could help the territory gain greater international visibility.

She pointed to Somaliland’s historic rock art, nomadic traditions, and natural coastline as key attractions. Hargeisa’s central market, she noted, remains a favourite location for tourists due to its welcoming atmosphere and sense of security.

Dylan Harris, founder of Lupine Travel and a long-term operator in the region, said Somaliland is “by far the safer option compared to Somalia” and continues to be one of the most reliable destinations in the Horn of Africa for organised tours.
