Isotretinoin 20 mg and 10 mg (oral) and Tretinion (topical cream/ serum) are used to treat acne, reduce fine lines, very effective, also it is a potent human teratogen with a 20%โ35% risk of causing severe birth defects, miscarriage, or premature birth, often called "retinoid syndrome"
Isotretinoin (Oral)
* High Risk: Known to cause severe birth defects (teratogen).
* Malformations: Includes small ears/missing ears, cleft palate, small jaw, heart defects, and brain abnormalities (hydrocephalus).
* Developmental Issues: 30%โ60% of exposed children may experience intellectual disabilities and cognitive impairment, even without physical defects.
* Pregnancy Loss: Increased risk of miscarriage and preterm delivery.
* Action Required: Absolute contraindication during pregnancy. Women must use two forms of contraception
* Common Retinoid Advice
* Stop immediately if you suspect you are pregnant.
* Avoid all Vitamin A derivatives (retinols, retinoids, tretinoin, isotretinoin) if planning to get pregnant.
* Use safe alternatives to treat acne like Azelaic acid and clindamycin topical preparations.
