How toxic is air pollution in Chiang Mai?

By assessing the health effects of the burning season in Northern Thailand and comparing them with the health effects of to***co smoke, we have calculated an equivalence of 66 μg/m3 for one cigarette.

Based on these calculations, the average pollution during the burning season has the health impact of smoking 1 to 2 ci******es per day. The annual average is 0.3 cigarette per day.

This study also shows that the composition of particulate matter pollution in Bangkok and large continental Asian metropolitan areas translates into an air pollution 3x more toxic than Chiang Mai.

How deep does air pollution goes into your lung?

Particulate matter (PM) in air pollution range from ~20 microns to less than 100 nanometers. The smaller it gets, the deeper it can enter your respiratory system.
While coarse PM is filtered by the nose and back throat, fractions smaller than a few microns can enter the lungs.
For small particulates, they can pe*****te into air sacs where toxins can enter the bloodstream and the smallest (PM0.1) can directly cross the blood-air barrier.

To limit the amount of particulate matter entering your body, it is recommended to wear a mask when pollution levels are high.
