Until last year, it felt strange to me — actually, almost like an interruption — to celebrate Father’s Day near the beginning of Advent.
December 5 is a major national holiday in Thailand. All schools and government offices close. Communities may have celebrations, including working together to clean up the neighborhood park. Lots of people wear yellow, the color of the monarchy, to honor the memory of “The Father of the Nation,” King Rama IX, who was born on this day.
It’s a wonderful holiday! It’s just that, after having put up our Christmas tree the week before, the timing always felt a little off-rhythm to me.
But last November, my dad nearly died. And suddenly I found myself fixated on the name “Everlasting Father” from Isaiah 9:6.
We were about to begin a series for children’s Sunday School on the beautiful names given to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6. The other titles all made sense … except for this one … why was God the Son being called “Everlasting Father”?
I spent some time reading about this wonderful name — and this year, I’m more than ready to celebrate Father’s Day as part of the Advent season!
Jesus the one who reveals the Father’s character to us, because he is one in nature and essence with God the Father. Jesus is also the “author …of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). In other words, he is the initiator, or founding father, of our faith. He is eternal, as he was with God in the beginning (John 1:1-3), and he rules forever (Rev. 11:15). Jesus is truly our Everlasting Father!
When King Rama IX was coronated, he declared, “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” What a beautiful echo of the biblical King’s heart.
Looks like Father’s Day fits perfectly with the Advent season, after all!
