Heavenly Father, thank you for Jesus, the ultimate gift of love. We pray for all the Christmas outreaches that have been happening this month, and that will continue this week. We pray that many will rejoice to hear of your great love; that they will receive this message with joy. We pray for good follow up of those who want to learn more about you. In Jesus' name, Amen.

When they first walked into our little community room, Muk and Nam were as silent as the nicknames they carried: Pearl and Water.

Muk (Pearl) and Nam (Water), sisters from a low-income neighborhood in Bangkok, embodied their names in those early days. They sat quietly at the back, observing everything. Like others in their community, they had never heard the name of Jesus and had no connection to Christians.

For weeks, then months, Muk and Nam simply listened. They absorbed the atmosphere of the Christian children’s program without offering a word.

Then, the shift began. They started coming not just for the songs and stories, but also for the homework help my Thai colleagues and I provided in the same room. We practiced math, worked on writing, and the girls began to practice their reading using a Thai children's Bible.

Today, the quiet 'Pearl' and still 'Water' have given way to two cheerful, outgoing girls. The room that once held their silence now echoes with their voices. They sing along to the children’s songs, they eagerly memorize Bible verses, and they know many Bible stories well.

Join us in giving thanks for how the joy of the Lord is filling their lives!

“Oh, no! I can’t believe the doctrine of the Trinity has come up already! How am I going to explain this in a clear and believable way? I don’t want my friend to get distracted by this very difficult doctrine!”

So ran my thoughts as my Thai friend asked me what it meant that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit. It was our first day of studying the Gospel of Mark together. In half an hour, we had made it through only eight verses!

I prayed, took a breath, and did my best to explain a Triune God. To my surprise, my friend – who is smart and insightful – didn’t respond with raised eyebrows or a skeptical question.

Instead, she smiled. And then, she almost laughed -- with joy! -- as she said, “This is such important news! This is so good. Christians should always tell this part right away! I always wondered how God could be with each one of us, each day. And now I know! It’s the Holy Spirit!”

Joy!

Lord, you have created the Thai people to love laughter and all things fun. "Sanuk" (fun) is a value here, and we thank you for this! At the same time, we acknowledge that not all things can be fun and lighthearted. In fact, maybe this year has brought deep pain and anguish. And so we ask you for a deep and lasting joy in our hearts and in the hearts of the Thai people. We praise you that you and your perfections never change; that your love and wisdom never diminish; that the salvation offered through Jesus is for all time. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Elliot and Grace, missionaries in Bangkok, were initially feeling rather anxious about a recent outreach, but peace and encouragement replaced those nervous feelings. They were particularly impacted by the unity and dynamic energy of the Korean visiting team, as well as special moments of unexpected grace in their ministry.

Heavenly Father, we come to you in this moment asking for peace in our own hearts and in the hearts of the Thai people. As our Creator, you are the one who can give this true peace, through the Holy Spirit working in our lives. We pray for your life-giving work in all our hearts.

We pray for peace in families where relationships have been broken; we ask for peace among brothers and sister in church families. We ask for reconciliation with grace and truth between individuals and groups.

Thank you for sending Jesus, the Prince of Peace. His life, death, and resurrection have opened the way for peace between God and humankind, among peoples and nations, and within our own hearts.

Until last year, it felt strange to me — actually, almost like an interruption — to celebrate Father’s Day near the beginning of Advent.

December 5 is a major national holiday in Thailand. All schools and government offices close. Communities may have celebrations, including working together to clean up the neighborhood park. Lots of people wear yellow, the color of the monarchy, to honor the memory of “The Father of the Nation,” King Rama IX, who was born on this day.

It’s a wonderful holiday! It’s just that, after having put up our Christmas tree the week before, the timing always felt a little off-rhythm to me.

But last November, my dad nearly died. And suddenly I found myself fixated on the name “Everlasting Father” from Isaiah 9:6.

We were about to begin a series for children’s Sunday School on the beautiful names given to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6. The other titles all made sense … except for this one … why was God the Son being called “Everlasting Father”?

I spent some time reading about this wonderful name — and this year, I’m more than ready to celebrate Father’s Day as part of the Advent season!

Jesus the one who reveals the Father’s character to us, because he is one in nature and essence with God the Father. Jesus is also the “author …of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2). In other words, he is the initiator, or founding father, of our faith. He is eternal, as he was with God in the beginning (John 1:1-3), and he rules forever (Rev. 11:15). Jesus is truly our Everlasting Father!

When King Rama IX was coronated, he declared, “We shall reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the Siamese people.” What a beautiful echo of the biblical King’s heart.

Looks like Father’s Day fits perfectly with the Advent season, after all!

Father, let your hope arise in our hearts and in the hearts of the Thai people! Lift our eyes up to see that you alone are where our hope comes from. Help us to put in your hands the anxiety, discouragements, and distractions that have filled this year.

May we pause to remember that we have hope in you, in what Jesus has done for us.

In Jesus' name,
Amen
