Progress Through Proven Science

In 2021, Neurotrauma Reports published a landmark study by Dr. Parag Gad, Zhong, Edgerton & Kreydin demonstrating that home-based, self-administered SCONE therapy can improve neurogenic bladder symptoms after stroke. The patient reported reduced urinary urgency, frequency, and incontinence — with improvements lasting for months after therapy. This research highlights the power of non-invasive spinal neuromodulation to restore autonomic function while reducing the burden of frequent clinic visits.

Dr. Parag Gad, one of the leading authors of this study, is also the driving force behind xStep — the next-generation device built on years of rigorous research to help restore critical everyday functions and independence.

When the brain’s connection to movement is disrupted after stroke, recovery begins by rebuilding communication.

A stroke can interrupt the dialogue between the brain and spinal cord, leading to challenges in movement and coordination. Rehabilitation focuses on retraining these pathways, and emerging technologies are helping make that process more effective than ever.

xStep, powered by SpineX, delivers gentle, precisely timed electrical signals through targeted spinal neuromodulation — helping reawaken dormant neural circuits to improve control, balance, and gait during rehabilitation.

This approach is part of a growing field known as restorative neurology, where neuromodulation enhances neuroplasticity and strengthens the body’s own recovery mechanisms. Researchers like Dr. Parag Gad continue to advance this frontier, showing how science can help rewrite the story of recovery after neurological injury.

ImagineWalk grows from one simple belief — that every step toward recovery matters. We’re here to connect people, expertise, and technology to make those steps possible.

🧬 Did You Know?
The spinal cord contains approximately 13.5 million neurons — each working tirelessly to transmit signals that control your every move and sensation.

Even when injury disrupts some of these pathways, the remaining circuits can often be retrained and strengthened.
xStep stimulates those spared circuits to help the body relearn movement, one step at a time.

For years, many living with paralysis are told that certain functions—walking, bladder or bowel control, sexual health—may never return. But emerging non-invasive spinal cord neuromodulation is challenging that belief.

A study published in Bioelectronic Medicine demonstrates that after just 30 sessions of SCONE (TESCoN) by SpineX, a participant with chronic motor-complete cervical SCI experienced remarkable improvements: voluntary leg movement, stabilized cardiovascular responses, enhanced bladder, bowel, and sexual function, and reduced severity of autonomic dysreflexia.

For people living with SCI, recovery priorities often extend beyond walking. Regaining independence in daily life and core bodily functions has an immediate, profound impact on quality of life—precisely what technologies like xStep (successor of SCONE), powered by SpineX and supported by ImagineWalk, aim to achieve.

This isn’t just temporary activation. By leveraging neuroplasticity, xStep helps re-tune neural networks, creating lasting improvements aligned with patient-prioritized outcomes.

At ImagineWalk, we are proud to raise awareness, connect patients with innovative solutions, and collaborate with partners like SpineX to bring these breakthroughs to life—for those living with paralysis, hope is no longer out of reach.

💚 Today is World Cerebral Palsy Day.

At ImagineWalk, this day means more than awareness — it’s about celebrating progress and possibility. Every person living with CP has a story of resilience that inspires what we do every day.

Through science, care, and the right technology, we continue to see how movement can return, confidence can grow, and lives can change.

Spinal neuromodulation is part of that journey — and we believe it will help more people with CP move, play, and live on their own terms.

Retraining the body through science

Training the bladder how to void: A noninvasive spinal neuromodulation case study was presented at the 10th International IEEE/EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering in May 2021 by Gad, Kreydin, Zhong & Edgerton. The study demonstrated that noninvasive spinal neuromodulation (TESCoN) combined with bladder training enabled significant improvements in bladder function in a man with complete chronic paralysis. The patient regained sensation of bladder fullness, improved voiding efficiency, and reported better quality of life — showing that spinal circuits can be retrained to restore critical autonomic function.

At ImagineWalk, we believe neurorehabilitation goes beyond motor recovery. That’s why we partner with SpineX, creators of xStep — a technology built on this body of research, designed to help restore everyday life functions with real, science-backed solutions. Because dignity and independence matter as much as mobility.

📏 Did You Know?
The average human spinal cord is about 45 cm (18 inches) long in men and slightly shorter in women.

This slender cord is packed with over 100 million nerve fibers — acting as a dense communication highway between the brain and body.

When this highway is disrupted due to injury or neurological conditions, movement and sensation can be impacted.

xStep helps reignite these pathways and restore function through home-based spinal neuromodulation.

🧠 Did You Know?
The spinal cord can actually learn — even without direct input from the brain.

Scientists have discovered that spinal circuits can adapt, remember, and even relearn basic motor patterns through repeated stimulation and training.

This gives hope for recovery even after injury or developmental conditions.
xStep leverages this neuroplasticity by reactivating these learning loops — helping the nervous system rewire itself for movement and control.

✨ Recovery is possible.
Let’s unlock the spinal cord’s hidden potential.
